Special interview: Lord Ian Botham relives the '81 Ashes, 40 years on

Published 2021-08-12
To mark 40 years since the 1981 Ashes, one of the greatest Test series ever played, Lord Ian Botham, who bestrode the encounter with bat and ball, dove deep into his reminiscences of the contest that changed English cricket with Wisden Cricket Monthly editor-in-chief Phil Walker.

Starting from the ill-fated West Indies tour which preceded the series, Botham recalls the lows of the death of much-loved tour manager Ken Barrington, his own departure from the captaincy, as well as recalling his magnificent performances at Headingley, Edgbaston and Old Trafford, with the great all-rounder Player of the Match in each game England won.

They also discuss Botham's life after cricket. He has since launched his own wine company, Botham's Wines, with whom this video is produced in association.
