Cultural Life in the Vilna Ghetto

Published 2021-04-05
Before the war, Vilna was called the Jerusalem of Lithuania. During the war, the Vilna Ghetto was the scene of ruthless and unspeakable horror, persecution, and degradation of the Jewish community. In one of the most amazing examples of resistance during the war, the Jewish community maintained a full and active cultural life including sports, music, and academic pursuits, all in the face of constant threat of death. Through the examination of publicity posters that survived the war, the story of the incredible cultural life in the Vilna Ghetto is told. This was the sixth lecture in the 10-week lecture series in partnership with St. Kilde Shule, October-December 2020, delivered by Dr. Yael Richler Freedman, Pedagogical Coordinator of the International School for Holocaust Studies.
