It's simple psychology, wearing a mask makes them feel protected, and therefore likely to play more aggressively and take more risks. Get everyone to wear masks and the game will be better for it. Better yet, try an experiment, get them to play in football gear.
  • He felt safe with his mask on so he played better, clearly. Before he was more focused on not getting hit.
  • I think it's a mix of feeling more protected, intimidating the other team, and the placebo effect.

You had every opportunity to play some MF DOOM, the ultimate masked villain of hip-hop, and you dropped the ball.

The same thing was discovered way back when by the NHL’s goalies. The masks offered a layer of protection that gave their goalies the ability to play at a level without a fear of being injured. The first goalie to wear one was clowned on, but the moment the other teams saw how he no longer feared the potential facial injuries and outperformed everyone, EVERY goalie from there on wore a mask.

There isn’t some curse or majik ju-ju from these NBA masks. It’s simply giving the players more courage to take more risks because of their new layer of physical protection.

Realistically, probably two reasons. One, as you said, all eyes are on the person wearing the mask. Two, players probably feel like they have an extra layer of protection and feel like they're invincible, especially looking at the history of the mask.

Interesting effect really. Studies have shown that drivers who recieved an extra training tend to cause more accidents because they think they are more capable now and drive more reckless.
I think there's a similar effect going on here. The mask protects them and there is less chance of further injury. Plus the boosted confidence. On the enemy's side you also have 3 things to consider.
1: The mask is a sign of injury. So going at it full force would be poor sportsmanship So the first couple of games the enemy players probably held back
2: Pressure. Masked players are known to perform great deeds. Going up against one is sure to cause a whole lot of pressure because everyone expects you to lose.
3: Supersticion. The player stepping on and trying to break the mask is a sign of somewhat believing in said curse turning this into a selffulfilling prophicy. If the player believes he can not win as long as his oponent is wearing a mask he dooms himself to failure.

Wearing a mask makes them feel they are the spotlight so they get hype coz they are the center of attraction, humble enough to play aggressively.. But still this dudes are insanely good without a mask on..its not the mask but the confidence the mask give to them
  • I think its definitely people feeling more impervious and confident with the mask. But at the same time I'm sure just looking at it is distracting for the opponents which throw off their game

The masks makes them feel bruise-proof. They can go headfirst towards the opposing team, as they know can't be touched. Meanwhile, the opposing team is also trying to keep distance to avoid hitting the masked baller. In conclusion, the mask makes the wearer feel bulletproof.
  • "give a man a mask, and he'll become his true self" -joker

surprised no one mentioned this quote here

edit: wow 5k likes, the replies are all hate but idrc I'll take the 5k likes lmao

    Few possibilities:
    - They played harder because they felt safer.
    - The other players were easier on them because they didn't want to hurt them.
    - The masks are subconsciously intimidating causing their opponents to play more passively.
    - Those wearing the mask makes them play harder because they want to live up to the legend.

Could be a mixture of these things or just a coincidence.
  • imagine if 2 teams played with everyone wearing matching masks w their jerseys. probably would be insane
  • @Chasem20
Maybe the mask makes other players scared to reinjure the player so he can go off
  • @IskeletuBr
It's amazing what people can do when they no longer fear facial injuries
