Chana Gutman née Eschwege was born in 1925 in Halberstadt, Germany. In 1935, she moved to Frankfurt am Main with her family. In January 1939, after the November Pogrom ("Kristallnacht"), Chana, her sister and brother were taken to a children's home in Heiden, Switzerland, as part of the Kindertransport. Her parents Josef and Berta Eschwege were deported from Frankfurt to Kovno in November 1941, and murdered on arrival. In 1945, Chana immigrated to Eretz Israel (Mandatory Palestine).
