Actors Who Suffered In A Corset Just For A Movie Or TV Role!

Hey, TheThings fans! Welcome back to another video. We all love basking in the fantasy world of period pieces like Bridgerton and The Titanic but we never really stop to consider how much work goes into bringing them to life.

The elaborate sets, perfectly coordinated ball dances, and most integral of it all - the over the top costumes. Costumes that we just learned aren’t the most comfortable. In fact some actresses have even called having to wear a corset a “nightmare.”

In this video we’re going over the experiences some of our favorite actors have endured over the years in order to bring these stories to the screen. From struggling to breathe, having their body physically changed, and being left with permanent injuries from corsets, it’s surprising to hear just how much of a struggle actresses endure for a role.

We’ll be listening to the experience of actors like Millie Bobby Brown, Nina Dobrev, and Kate Winslet in movies and TV shows like Enola Holmes, Cinderella, The Vampire Diaries, and Superwoman. After hearing and listening to these actors experience, you’ll never be able to watch a period piece the same again.

It’s no wonder Emma Watson was adamant about not wearing a corset for her role as Belle in Beauty and the Beast. We probably would have done the same after watching this video. Let us know what actor on this list you think deserves the most awards for their “breathtaking” experiences. Thanks for watching and we’ll catch you in another video.

If you have a corset made for you by someone who knows what they are doing then they're really comfortable. This video should be entitled "actors who were let down by their costume departments and lack of preparation for tight lacing" because really that's what's happening here.
  • @Ariannaperroots
This is absolutely not how corsets should fit. Historical corsetry has gotten a bad rep over time. Corsets should be a supportive and shapely garment but should in no way be laced so tight as to restrict breathing. Women used to work on farms and do all sorts of physical labor and if their corsets fit like this, it would have been impossible.

youre not supposed to wear a corset without something underneath!!!!
  • @Korynith
Sigh. Corsets should never be painful. I have been wearing one for the last twelve hours - no pain. If they are the correct size for your body, you should not be in pain.
  • Ok, as every person who wears a corset knows that a corset should feel like a tight hug. You should still be able to breathe in it and not struggle as much as they did. THEY SHOULD SUE
  • @akshara487
Maybe one day our grandchildren will say- " I wonder how women were able to wear bras back then, they are so uncomfortable."

Corsets really aren't all that bad. The only real problem is that the corsets seen in movies aren't necessarily worn or made right, and because the actresses always hear about how horrible corsets are they never bother with trying to compromise. Most likely, these actresses were wearing corsets that were tight-laced, which is by no means necessary to wear one. If you're interested in learning about actual corsets and what they're like, I'd suggest checking out dress historians with greater knowledge on the matter like Bernadette Banner.

The corsets these actrices were “forced” to wear were propably not fitted to their bodys and same like a shoe you have to break them in. Women back in the day also didn’t wear corsets on their bare skin, they would wear somthing underneath. You can look up photos of victorian women sporting and rockclimbing in corstets. First time you wear a bra will also hurt and leave a mark if its too tight. Corsets were made by women, they weren’t out to torture eachother

This whole video was painful to watch. And to think, nearly every issue these women complained about could've been fixed if they and the directors actually allowed time to get a properly fitted corset and get used to it for a little bit (+ wearing a chemise underneath). Corsets SHOULD NOT "fuse ribs" so an actress can't breathe, shouldn't mark up your skin, shouldn't make you faint, shouldn't cause long term harm, etc... Women of the time period weren't being horrifically disfigured by corsets for beauty (except for being uncomfortable in the very rare exceptions of tight lacing), corsets were like the modern day equivalent of a bra. They supported the breasts, gave a smoother silhouette and shape for the dress, and supported the many layers of a dress by distributing the weight across the rest of the torso, they weren't medieval torture devices.

The Bridgerton one annoys me the most, because-- as rare as it may have been -- tightlacing could be at least somewhat plausible in these other movies/tv shows....but Bridgerton is set in the fucking Regency Era! They essentially wore sacks for dresses back then, and the metal eyelet which made tightlacing possible wouldn't have been invented for another 40 years!!
  • @aarna6853
Two seconds in and we see a stay without a chemise.
  • Just a reminder that corsets are uncomfortable if they aren’t fitted right for your body and are pulled too tight 😁

Edit: I want to add to this. since I’ve made this comment I watched a few more videos on this, videos on how to properly wear a corset and take care of it ect. Along with some educational videos on TikTok.

If the actors were uncomfortable it was because of these three reasons:
    1. Wrong measurements/structure
    2. It wasn’t seasoned and made to comfortably fit on their body before filming
    3. If you’re a new to wearing corsets, your only supposed to wear it for around an hour and slowly work your way up.

Costume designers, while talented, they could also accidentally mess up a corset and harm the wearer. But let’s say the measurements are perfect in every way, you’d still need to season the corset. Seasoning is when you break the corset in like you’d break in a new pair of heels or shoes. Seasoning takes time and that is when you’d start out with only an hour of wear time at first. Actresses most likely are put into a brand new corset and even if they had the knowledge to season it, I doubt they’d have the time to do it before filming. While filming they’d be in an unfit corset for 7-12 hours a day which is super uncomfortable with the proper precautions taken.

Also to readdress the too tight part, tight lacing is also one of the big problems with corsets and health. Tight lacing is when you lace your corset too tight or wear one a little small. That can really mess you up physically. Your organs will shift a little when wearing a corset (that’s normal just like when your organs shift when your pregnant), but when tight lacing they might get squished too much.

Long story short: Corset good/ misinformation bad. Using a corset the way it’s supposed to be, good/ using a corset incredibly wrong, bad

Edit 2: I forgot to say this when writing this but someone reminded me, Corsets aren’t meant to be worn on bare skin!!! It’s can cause a bunch of issues if you do. Always wear something under neath
  • @lucyicanel
Something's wrong if their corsets are that uncomfortable.
  • @vivienneq2556
So you’re saying that their costume departments were awful? Corsets normally aren’t that bad, they’re basically extended medieval bras. They’re only bad if they’re laced too tightly or wrongly made
  • @OcarinaSapphr-
When Millie says her corset ‘eventually got easier to wear’, that means she had worn it in- if these actresses were properly fitted & given the necessary time to ‘season’ their corsets, it’s unlikely that they would have much to complain about - I also think most of us slouch so much these days, & are used to things like softer, squishier furniture with much more give- when wearing a corset, or boned bodice- you do have to adapt to how you move & sit, but corsets are not some fetishistic torture device- how would they have lasted *centuries* if they had been...?
  • I love how everyone In the comments is aware that corsets are not bad 🙌🏻
  • I do believe the actresses when they say wearing the corsets was uncomfortable.
But, are those corsets the correct size, and are they correctly laced? This is the main issue.
  • @dumbspaghetti_
None of these corsets were worn properly. You don't wear them straight on your skin and if it's uncomfortable it's definitely the wrong size.
