After all the thrill is gone, you'll be left with a mayor head ache IF you dont have money to hire professionals for up-keeping (might be ok doing it yourself for a while), upgrades, and repairs. Perhaps it will still be worth it if you have a couple of kids that know how to swim a little. Even during the summer months you can only swim comfortably when sun is not at its peak hours. For typical play pool, the water heats up and will feel a bit soupy. Then comes the monsoon season and if your neighbors have trees it will clog up your pool quickly and frequently. The amount of chlorine tablets needed can be high during Summer. Pray that you dont accidentally catch a mustard algae which is hard to get rid off and will make you pull your own hair out of frustration. Make sure your filter is really filtering your water at top deficiency and duration. Expect that scenario every year in some fashion to happen if you do it solo. My next home would have no pool.
  • If you don't have a pool in Phoenix you still have a yard you have to maintain but for most of the year you'll be staring at it thru your windows as it's too hot to be out in - so it's useless. Biggest mistake I made was not buying a house with a pool.
  • 100% yes! I’ve had 2 saltwater pools, and they were gorgeous, so easy to care for and the water features were so relaxing. Exercise plus fun in the sun is amazing to me! I love being outside but in our summer heat, I wouldn’t be out much of not for the pool. 😛
  • Such good information Lindsay. It really is a boon to have your own pool and hot tub but expenses can be prohibitive. I remember from when I was teaching swimming and lifeguarding. That was a frequent question. Thank you. C.H.
  • Hi Lindsay. This is very helpful; especially the part about solar. There is one thing that I was hoping you'd cover, and that is caliche. We were thinking of purchasing a new construction home, and putting the pool in later to save money initially. But then I heard something about the big possibility of hitting caliche in AZ (super hard soil that needs special tools to excavate) when building a pool. I've heard this can really drive the costs up. But by how much? if a basic pool is around $35k, what percentage am I going to get dinged for if they hit caliche when digging?

We love having a pool in Anthem, also I had a pool cleaning service when I lived in California.

A pool would be worth it since my future wife and I would go skinny dipping in it day or night.
