Online Church Is NOT Church!

In this Christian vlog, I'm talking about why "online church" or "virtual church" is NOT church! I share some of my concerns about the growing demand for an online experience and how our ecclesiology is being shaped by cultural norms. What foreseeable problems may arise post-COVID-19?

Brothers and sisters, let us continually assess our hearts and our priorities and pray for the Spirit to expose us of any idolatry of consumerism, convenience and safety. As we are instructed in Hebrews 10:25 - let us not neglect to meet together and encourage on another, all the more as the day of our Lord’s return is drawing near.

  • AMEN BROTHER!! I STRONGLY AGREE WITH YOU AND I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL MY CHURCH OPENS UP AGAIN. THERE IS NO BETTER EXPERIENCE LIKE WORSHIPPING TOGETHER WITH OTHER BELIEVERS. THIS IS A REAL POWERFUL MESSAGE THAT I PRAY EVERY ONE WILL WATCH. THANK YOU BROTHER, GOD BLESS YOU!! 🙏
  • Thank you, David, for your point. The video may now be from another era. The questions are still relevant however and many elements of your view very instructive, but maybe your answers have evolved. I would like to make a contribution in that direction, stretching your thoughts in the opposite direction. I believe that a digital church is a reality that stretches our spirituality to areas and levels where the Lord wanted the church to look into for centuries. It seems that the enjoyment of the "bodily" church habits and uses have limited us from the deepest gifts of our Christian spirituality. What is the body of Christ? is it a physical or "bodily "entity that people, see? Yet it considered to be one and its members united. Coming to a more "bodily" look on the same, I do not think that Peter felt as he was speaking to a lesser church when he wrote to the dispersed church. He spoke to them as one body dispersed in the diaspora but still united as a church. The opportunity of the virtual or digital church has obliged the church to move and continue to develop beyond the limits posed by a focus on the "bodily" or physical community realities. We are still bodies and physical being and we will continue to enjoy that but in terms of the worship of Christ, I think that sentiment of community brought about by the digital and virtual communities may be a necessary and an important stretch to a healthy and more powerful spirituality, the one that is essentially and intrinsically based on the Spirit and Truth. It should be encouraged even where people can meet "bodily".
  • we go, we sit, we listen, and we leave... this is church in omaha nebraska, and i have been questioning if this is what God really intended, or if church somehow became like this by some other means. when i review the biblical church, and the church of today, it doesnt match up. oftentimes the verse used to get people to go to church is the do not forsake the gathering together of believers, but what ive experienced is that once we go through the doors, we are immediately ushered to be seated in wait for the show to start. we end up listening to someone ramble on for an hour, and then when its class dismissed, everyone goes their own way. theres not much, if any opportunity to spend much needed time with anyone. yes, i know, relationships take time, but how much time? when we are lucky to get 5 minutes or so with any one person each sunday? come on now. and then there really isnt any discipleship except haphazard bible studies. i have a suspicion that our nation has been hypnotized by cultural churchianity for decades, and until now, its never been caught or questioned. have we been so caught up with doing church that we never knew what church was meant to be? just thoughts :)
  • A good discussion about your conversation on online services and physical gatherings /assemblies, by the grace of God we will go back to this physical element. I watched liked commented and subscribed

Same thing with the "franchise" church - one main brick and mortar, with "satellite locations" and "online delivery". On one hand, have an online stream for those that can't make it, but if that becomes the church's permanent function, then it's being done wrong.

I'll give you a high five if I could. That is so true. The problem I have with online fellowship I feel disconnected who do I ask to pray for me if I was limited to online fellowship? Or who do I ask questions to about the Bible if I was unlimited to online fellowship?

You make a lot of very strong points, David. Our church in SC in the US has been meeting for two worship services for the last 2-3 months. Today we began gathering all the Sunday School classes between the two services. Attendance has been down for out church since we started gathering in person again. would have maybe about 2000 for two services pre Covid. Like you, I believe many have gotten comfortable with the convenience of sitting around at home and watch online. Lord willing, they will eventually return. Keep up the good work- God bless!
  • The church is not internet the church is not a building the church is the brothers and sisters in Christ. To be around true Christians is definitely nice.there are many Luke warm out there and even less true Christians

@David RYU Thanks, are there any scriptures which mention that believers must assemble together physically or something translated as meaning in close proximity to eachother?
