Why We Shoulder (Head) Check When Turning Left

Published 2017-01-14
For the purposes of a road test you must shoulder (head) check when turning left, but why? Watch the video! Get PASS ROAD TEST CHECKLIST: www.smartdrivetest.com/pass-road-test-checklist SUBSCRIBE TODAY! ► youtube.com/c/smartdrivetest

The 4 key components of any road test, regardless of class are:

1) speed management;
2) space management;
3) observation;
4) communication.

Your ability to observe includes scanning patterns that check the mirrors. During a road test, observing also includes shoulder check whenever you move the vehicle laterally. In other words, when ever you turn the vehicle--either left or right--you must shoulder check.

It is especially important to shoulder check in busy urban areas where many road users--(scooters, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcycles)--ply for road space. And with some drivers being unpredictable, taking the inside track to pass you is always a possibility.

Therefore, for the purposes of a road test, shoulder checking whenever making a left or right turn is an imperative skill!

If you drive on the left side of the road you must head check when making a right hand turn.

  • In india, at busy intersections you have specific left and right turn signals. So there's no requirement to judge the gap. However of course one can never predict about other cars jumping the signals. What you said about motor cycles in Britain and Australia, applies to India as well.

    Failed my road test yesterday because I didn't signal when leaving parking spots and I relied on the rear view camera system in my car instead of turning my head and looking through the rear window when backing up. When you take your road test, don't make these silly mistakes!

    Best driving vids on youtube! I appreciate your work!
  • @ytr8989
    Good advice. I’ve seen many accidents where 🚗 simply change lanes without looking.. I must say people drive more courteous than here in the States. Drove through Alberta into Vancouver, was a real nice drive. 👍

  • Hi Rick! Awesome videos, helps me a lot on practicing on my parents car also I live in BC too which makes me more confident because we follow the same rules. I was wondering and would want to make a request if you can make a video on proper lane positioning, its kind of a problem for me especially when turning right or left, I tend to eat so much space that sometimes I become unaware that I'm already way over the other lane. Thank you so much in advance and more power 😊

    Dear Rick, thank you for your amazing videos! Could I ask a question. When changing lane to left, shoulder chek cannot see the bike right exactly besides my B pillar. How to solve the problem? Thank you!
  • My dad said should checking when turning is kinda OCD and can also keep you from seeing other things (car coming in the road). I definitely see why it’s needed and don’t doubt the need to do it especially if you don’t let it distract you. It’s worth looking like a weirdo or “OCD” to drive the safest I can.

    Hi Rick, I really love your perfection and systematic explanations. I just bought a car recently and trying to sharpen and perfect my skills. I am a student pilot at the Caldwell airport in New Jersey and must say flying the planes is really so easy indeed and enjoyable. I am a great fan of bicycling and ride my road bike to the airport about 15 miles every time and plan to ride my bike into NYC to my new job in upper Manhattan. At the same time, I am in the process of acquiring a liter bike most probably a Kawasaki / Yamaha. All this forces me to think about the same situation from different perspectives. Not sure if you would be inclined but It will surely be wonderful if you could cover few tips from motorcyclists / bicyclists perspective in general, just a suggestion. Thanks, your videos are the best among what I have found so far!

    Thank you for answering my other question. I have one more. When taking a right turn and the light is green but no arrow, do we have to stop behind the limit line and check both ways then creep forward or can you just go around the turn without stopping. Thanks for you help
  • @tugaman1000
    In California Motorcycles do that all the time. Good video.
  • Sometime I forgot to shoulder check when making a left turn.I always focust on looking on my side mirrors or my review mirror.Will they fail me if I forgot to shoulder check while making a left turn on my driving test this month?
  • @cutie13581
    Does this apply to all left hand turns, including those with a green arrow/protected left turn
  • Rick what if I'm trying to make a left turn and theres a left turn signal but its not lite and it's still a green with no oncoming traffic I can still go obviously right?
  • @trucks8137
    Yep with motorbikes its called lane filtering , lane splitting, but you can only lane split if your doing less than 30 km, seems to be safe enough i havnt seen anything dangerous so far
  • man you through some noise stuff! it's like being a mom of five...he he he! always always check all around me...everywhere and sometimes twice!
  • @sarahalimm
    If there's a curb on my left hand side on a highway, what am I checking the left shoulder check for? There's absolutely no car or person creeping up from there.
