(27 Oct 2020) The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Tuesday urged the US Secretary of State to stop driving the Trump administration’s anti-China message while on a visit to India.
The visit to India, the first in a five-day Asia trip by Mike Pompeo and Defense chief Mark Esper, is aimed at strengthening ties in the face of increasing Chinese assertiveness in the region.
Wang Wenbin, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, urged Pompeo to "stop hyping the so-called 'China threat', stop sowing discords between China and other countries in the region, and stop erroneous acts that undermine regional peace and stability."
Pompeo and Esper's trip would highlight cooperation between Washington and New Delhi in confronting the Chinese Communist Party's threat to security and freedom, according to the US Secretary of State.
Wang meanwhile demanded the Trump administration revoke the sales of missiles and other arms systems to Taiwan "to avoid further damage to U.S.-China relations".
The Trump administration on Monday notified Congress of plans for a 2.37 billion US dollar sale of Harpoon missile systems to Taiwan - the second major arms sale in two weeks to the island that Beijing regards as a renegade province.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced on Monday it would impose sanctions on companies that make the weapons systems, including Lockheed Martin Corps, Raytheon Technologies Corp. and Boeing Co.'s defense division.
"China will take legitimate and necessary measures to resolutely defend national sovereignty and security interest," said Wang.
Meanwhile Hong Kong-based newspaper South China Morning Post reported a student activist was arrested by Hong Kong police' national security Tuesday morning in a coffee shop before he was about to seek asylum in the US Consulate.
Asked at the briefing about the incident, Wang said he was not aware of the arrest but supported Hong Kong judicial authorities in enforcing the law.
