Adam Savage's Penny Drop Wind Tunnel (with Veritasium!)

Published 2022-10-01
Watch Adam join Veritasium to explore the Fatal Physics of Falling Objects:    • How Dangerous is a Penny Dropped From...

Adam demonstrates the wind tunnel he built for the Penny Drop episode of MythBusters, which tested the terminal velocity of a falling penny, and was also a device critical to Adam developing the build aspects of the show. Special guest Derek Muller of @Veritasium visits the cave to check out the wind tunnel as part of Adam's guest appearance on Veritasium!

When I asked you to come drop pennies on me from a helicopter in the desert, I totally expected you to say no. Thank you for being game, for coming out and teaching me so much!
  • The thing I remember most about that episode was how excited Adam was for his gizmo to work and how simultaneously completely unimpressed Jamie was

This world would not be the same without Adam! He’s been an inspiration for almost 2 decades!
  • Amazing video -- it was such a joy to film with you all! Thanks for having us!

I remember that episode and how excited Adam was about it. Then he showed it to Jamie who didn't seem to care at all. Basically described their relationship in 5 mins.

I have such fond family memories of watching Adam in my childhood. I'm sad to say most of my closest family members have passed away, but seeing Adam in a pseudo-mythbusters capacity again really brought back some good memories. Mythbusters got me interested in asking questions and trying experiments! Thanks for everything! You all made my day!

Mythbusters got so much better when it shifted from recounting myths (with some testing), to more open-ended exploration. One of my favorite moments from college was during freshman physics. The physics department insisted that every researcher teach an undergrad class. We got a visiting researcher who wanted to teach an introductory class. That day's lecture was about "equal but opposite reaction." He brought out a little red wagon, a fire extinguisher, and a helmet. He put the helmet on, climbed into the wagon, and then used the fire extinguisher as jet propulsion. The sheer joy on his face as the wagon rolled faster and faster across the stage is something I will always remember.
  • I just want to say how grateful I am that Adam and Jamie and the build team took this kind of "prove it" physical approach to science. It made it accessible to kids and young adults. It spoke directly to my engineering brain and was a major contributor to my career today. I now have an 8 year old daughter who is beginning to watch Mythbusters and get into it the same way I did as a young adult. Thank you to the whole team that made that possible.
  • i got goose bumps when he said he was going to spin it up. holy cow. i miss the mythbusters

The fact that there's a rumor that you could kill someone by throwing a penny off a building and that the ledge of said building is covered in change is a little disturbing if you think about it.

You guys are TOTALLY superheroes! In fact, we don't need DC or Marvel superheroes. We need people like you that can get everyone enthusiastic about learning! Scrolling through social media proves to me everyday that we do not have enough people like you in the world that can greatly improve how we view the world, which ultimately heightens our understanding and caring for each other as human beings!
  • Mr. Savage, even at 45 now you are a hero to me. You also have an immortal legacy that will teach and inspire for years to come, And that's pretty super to me.
  • I still love listening to Adam talk even after all those years!
  • You are a real life superhero. Think about how many lives that you touched in a positive manner.
  • Adam's joy at his job and the way he takes us along for the ride is why Mythbusters was such a hit.

I remember Jamie altering I think it was a power stapler to shoot pennies at high speed, just by bending the wire at the bottom enough to hold a penny. Such a Jamie solution, simple and effective. Between the two of you, you covered every aspect of so many myths and Mythbusters may be my favorite show in all of history. I bought the first 7 seasons on DVD, and bought the rest on Amazon. Many nights I can only fall asleep listening to you discussing solutions, and laughing with pure joy.

myth busters is why I love making and building stuff thank you Mr. Savage
  • @liferdk
I'm a huge fan (human, not mechanical) of both of you! Awesome to see you two collaborating! This better not not be a one-off! :D
  • @arysium2308
Funny how I literally watched that original episode last night. Awesome to see you still have old builds like that still lying around!
