How much sleep do you need per night? Here is a general guideline for different age groups:
Newborns - 14 to 17 hours a day
12 months - About 10 hours at night, plus 4 hours of naps
2 years - About 11 to 12 hours at night, plus a 1- to 2-hour afternoon nap
3 to 5 years - 10 to 13 hours
6 to 13 years - 9 to 11 hours
14 to 17 years - 8 to 10 hours
Adults - 7 to 9 hours
Not getting enough sleep will have adverse affects on your physical and mental health. This includes your productivity, your immune system, your weight, and your emotional well-being. This is because your body doesn't merely shut off at night; while you sleep, your body is recovering and preparing itself for the day ahead.
Try following to make sure you get good, quality sleep:
-Keep a regular sleep schedule
-Get a quality mattress and pillow
-Get enough exercise during the day
-Avoid stimulants several hours before bed
-Relieve stress through journalling, taking a walk, meditation
Putting in the effort to ensure enough quality sleep will allow you to see benefits that include a stronger immune system, happier moods, improved memory, controlled appetite, and having less chance to develop health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.
