Barbados has become the world's newest republic, officially removing Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state.

In an overnight ceremony in the capital, Bridgetown, Dame Sandra Mason was sworn in as president.

The Prince of Wales and Barbadian singer Rihanna attended the event, which coincided with the country's 55th anniversary of independence.

In a speech, Prince Charles acknowledged the "appalling atrocity of slavery" the Caribbean island had suffered.

Idk why I'm so emotional. I guess tears of Joy. So happy for the people of Barbados. The new Republic of Barbados 🇧🇧. Good luck and good will. From our experience independence doesn't mean totally cutting ties but building a new friendly and mutual relationship with the mother country. You have only 1 we have 3 that colonized us. The past might be bloody and dark but we acknowledge and respect all of these countries that made us who we are today. Mabuhay( Long Live) the People of Barbados.........💖From Las Islas de Filipinas.

So moving! I shed tears for the African captives who were enslaved and the Arawak Indian indigenous people who were exterminated. May God continue to grant their souls peaceful rest! 🙏
