Whether they were sailing the seas or heading to an underwater land, the Pirates of the Caribbean team brought the magic to the fifth film of the franchise: Dead Men Tell No Tales. A new directing team and director of photography brought an amazing new vision that still managed to honor the pirate genre we’ve grown to love so much.
Remember seeing the bank on the run? What’s really wild is that this ACTUALLY happened. A tractor was sitting inside that building and then, coordinating with the stunt team, all the real-live horses on set, and five hundred extras - let’s just say it was a very hectic shoot. The only thing scarier than real sharks is ghost sharks - and the Pirates of the Caribbean set saw both in their production. The CGI and props department collaborated to develop some of the creepiest creatures we’ve ever seen - partially because they’re just so realistic.
Need to make some actors look spooky? Try the cracked earth technique that was responsible for Salazar and his crew. Prosthetics and very complicated makeup led to some actors spending over three hours preparing! Salazar wasn’t the only one though - another actor wound up getting prosthetic mutton chops applied. Filming underwater happened on dry land - but you wouldn’t know it with how brilliantly the underwater environment is captured - we’re talking perfectly rippled lights and handcrafted coral. Of course, there was plenty of time spent on the sea as well - on boats that the team made just for production! These ships are incredibly detailed and bring the story to life. No shortcuts were taken in building this movie - and it makes for a fantastic contribution to the franchise we’ve grown to love so much.
