NASA just completed its investigation of debris crashing through the roof of a house in Naples, Florida. This debris was from a pod released by the ISS but has sparked attention to the possibility of SpaceX Starlink satellite debris causing injury to some on Earth.

Today we review the article many of you sent me and possibly debunk this notion.

ISS: hey John, roll the window down. I got some trash to throw out. NASA: space debris is become a major problem and we need more funding to study the problem.
  • @sfgrovessr
NASA, how about releasing the batteries individually instead of a pallet of them together.
  • @lannyplans
New problems can lead to new solutions. May lead to new methods for reentry.
  • @watchmansmitty1
Since when is mass measured in lbs? Did the article really say that? It was probably written by one of those Didn't Earn It hires.
  • @dh66
There is a higher chance of winning the lottery or getting hit by lightning, now, if both things HAVE happened to you, THEN I'd worry about space debris 😂😂😂
  • @brucelytle1144
Various speeds, kinda slow today in Sedan. Advanced shows 111 down, 16.7 up. Standard shows 136 down, 14.6 up, 36 ms latency.
  • @Hurricane-John
I'm wondering if NASA plans for this stuff to re enter over Point Nemo and this was a one off? I've read before that point Nemo is the satellite graveyard for anything that survives re-entry
  • @mikejasper520
Nasal could save money and prevent problems like this Instead of using a expensive connection rod just to throw out old batteries. They should put some harbor freight tie down straps on it to get it out the door.
  • @Istandby666
And I thought you were going to do the mathematics of the 1.6 lb object falling through thermal velocity and the speed the object hit the house.
  • @hanshaw1974
1.6 lbs that we know of. Could be a lot of stuff in the ground.
  • @BillWiltsch
    So, I was asking Perplexity about the terminal velocity and force a 1.6lb cylindrical metal object would reach, and by my second follow up question, it figured out I was asking about this particular object and had the specs. Term velocity was 254 mph, 4700kN. Perplexity is an awesome, non-woke, AI tool, good for engineering stuff. Plugging in the values: Vt = √(2 * 0.726 * 9.8 / (1.225 * 0.0013 * 0.82)) = √(14.2 / 0.0011) = √12,909 = 113.7 m/s (254 mph) The impact force (F) can then be calculated using the formula: F = 1/2 * m * Vt^2 / s Assuming a deformation distance (s) of 0.1 m: F = 1/2 * 0.726 * (113.7)^2 / 0.1 F = 4,700 kN (4,700,000 N) Therefore, the force produced when the 1.6 lb cylindrical object from the International Space Station crashes into a house would be approximately 4,700 kN (4,700,000 N)
  • Of course a rare and unrelated occurrence would be linked to starlink personally. Well, it's either him or 45. I'm just surprised they haven't tried to delay them in court for the eclipse.🤣
  • @johnkwolf
Might not hit the ground but what about airplanes they could get hit by a piece of debris and then they might go down and hit the ground.
  • Why wouldn't space companies de-orbit debris over an ocean? I'm no rocket scientist and I'm sure there is more to it than a simple shove down and wave good bye but surely someone thought about where to de-orbit the debris.
