The mum mentioned she has 2 other children and I’m wondering if the 19 year old is the youngest child. Often, a mother will get too attached to the youngest child because they’re not ready to stop looking after their children so they latch onto the last one to try to look after them for as long as possible.

As someone whose wife had a similar relationship with their mom at the beginning of our relationship (We met in highschool so it wasn't that weird to me and it wasn't THIS extreme.) , I can confirm this takes a huge mental toll on the daughters. When she started to distance herself from her mother, she (mom) would spite me for it. Then as revenge she started being extremely abusive towards her. She raised my wife to baby her, not to be an adult. Her phycologist said the same thing, so one could imagine who did all of the domestic leads and and who was silenced when they were feeling sad because the other cAnT dEal WitH iT. (SPOILER: it wasn't my mother in law). It's a very disturbing situation and worst of all is that the kids rarely notice it. I'm very happy with how my wife is recovering but the mental anguish that this shi causes is too much.
