At every meal, we make choices of what to feed our bodies—and our brains. Too much sugar and refined carbs, not enough good fats, inadequate intake of the right nutrients, and exposure to toxins can have a negative effect on our brains and even contribute to disorders ranging from brain fog to depression to Alzheimer’s. Nutrients are the fertilizer for the brain. When we get the right kinds, our brain can flourish and grow, even generating new cells in older age, long after science previously thought was possible.

In this episode of my new MasterClass series, I am interviewed by my good friend and podcast host, Dhru Purohit, about using diet and lifestyle to support brain health. We also talk about why it’s important to treat the body when it comes to treating brain issues, and I share my own experience using Functional Medicine to heal my own brain.

Dhru Purohit is a podcast host, serial entrepreneur, and investor in the health and wellness industry. His podcast, Dhru Purohit Podcast, is a top 50 global health podcast with over 30+ million unique downloads. His interviews focus on the inner workings of the brain and the body and feature the brightest minds in wellness, medicine, and mindset.

  • I am a retired emergency department registered nurse. I also had a heart attack at 61. I am now 66. I am constantly seeking out new research and watch hundreds upon hundreds of videos with subjects like ketogenesis, atophagy, decreasing the amount of processed carbohydrates and sugars, fully research the old paradigms regarding cholesterol, have stopped my statins, have gotten away from the SAD diet... and continue to research. I am convinced at this time that I know more than my cardiologists and my primary care physician who all refused to change their belief systems regarding the old paradigms. Trying to find a new cardiologist that isn't stuck in the Dark Ages with the old paradigms has been futile. So at this point I've learned to take care of myself and do what I believe is correct from all the research that I've done. I keep my cardiologists just so that I can schedule an echocardiogram every now and then and get an EKG. This is an example of the sad state of our Healthcare System.

January 2022 - Started Keto + OMAD + walked 8 miles every other day + drink 3 liters of filtered water daily infused with Dr. Berg’s Electrolyte powder = October 2022 - Lost 50 lbs, best blood test results ever and stopped 7 meds guided by doctor. Today - still focused on these habits for life. Additional habits - regularly view videos like this for continued reinforcement of why I live this way.

My mother was 85 years and had diabetes, hypertension, renal failure and osteoarthritis. I controlled all the diseases with exercises and dietary management. Now she's free from all the drugs she used

WHY IS EVERY MEDICAL DOCTOR IN THE WESTERN WORLD not REQUIRED TO HAVE THIS KNOWLEDGE????!!!!!!!
  • I watched Dr. Hyman during the time I broke out with the worst case of Eczema. I had Eczema for over 30 years. He talked about mercury and silver fillings in the teeth. Also taking Chlorella tablets to detox it out of the body. 5 months before that I had the silver fillings removed from my mouth. So I took Chlorella tablets, ate the best I could and the itching stopped and no more Eczema. I thank Dr. Hyman for Truth. Great Doctor 👍

My grandfather was a physician, Internist and heart specialist. He was in charge of the Army hospitals in France in WWII. The rest of his life he went to Walter Reed hospital at least once a year. For generations our family ate healthy food and my grandfather was no exceptions. He had a big garden every summer. When he was old he had his beet garden. Best beet greens you can imagine. My mother had no sweets in the house and I followed with my daughter. My point is back in the day 1886-1972 doctors knew how important food was. Then in the 60's the hippies were all about eating healthy. We experienced new ways to eat even more healthy than our parents. The food industry followed. Then the low fat no fat stuff that everyone got fat on. So now all this sugar stuff. Have a piece of dark chocolate after dinner for your heart. I wish I knew that one decades ago💕🙏 Thank you for your excellent information‼️💪

Fighting Hashimoto's Hypothyroidism, chronic pancreatitis, Fibromyalgia and asthma (among other things). Just about to complete an intensive, 5 month heavy metal detox (1 week in to the 4 week brain phase). Totally eradicated my chronic fatigue and am hoping this phase will clear my brain fog. Still have a looooooong way to go but it's a good start. Just learned about functional medicine through your videos today. On a constant quest to learn. Thank you!

It's amazing what can happen when someone gets a doctor who really cares and provides quality treatment. Half the doctors out there just brush off their patients concerns, hand them a pill, and say come back in a year.
  • Dr. Hyman's speech is dense in content but at the same time easy to understand and retain. Fun and expressive too. Plus he looks like Jon Stewart!

"The worse things for your brain are starch and sugar; treat them as recreational drugs." That is priceless.
  • Avoid sugar and starch and transfats and refined processed oils like vegetable oil

Attention human beings: Fasting everyday for 20 hours for the past year has dramatically decreased my Anxiety, Depression, and increased spirituality, joy, calmness, serenity. I wanted to lower my blood glucose levels for decreased insulin sensitivity. I also do a 24 hour fast once a week. 72 hour fast once a month. I eat once a day, with no snacking whatsoever, very strict. Also I have eliminated all processed sugar and food from my diet. No milks of any kind, no breakfast cereals, or grains at all. Small amount of carbs, but only from gluten free grains. 1cup of quinoa or wild rice every other day. My Mantra now is absolutely Nothing in a bag, box, can, or package of any kind. Only fresh organic vegetables. And Lots of R.O. H2O. Also seeing huge gains adding electrolytes to my water R.O. at all times. Thanks DOC!!!!!!!
  • You have given so much clarity to this issue. I’m 70 and had a Scan and got the diagnosis. My doctor is concerned because I told her the meds were more dangerous than the diagnosis, and I’m not taking them. I’m so glad i found this video. Thank you so much.
  • I had to ask my functional doctor to test for heavy metals; as there was no "cause" for my issues that continued to get worse. Turns out I had both mercury & lead toxicity. I had my mercury fillings removed at a biological dentist via SMART and am now on a heavy metal detox. I hope I will soon feel better.

Exhaustive research has led to a rock solid, valid observation. That is, the very best doctors are the ones who researched their own life- threatening conditions, and cured themselves. They are cutting edge--not driven by big pharma. They fully understand the body. Finally, and very important, they are humble truth seekers. Once they figure things out, they want to share their knowledge for everyone's benefit. Cleveland Clinic Functional Medicine Department, which I have been to, is very fortunate to have Dr Hyman as Director. In modern society, it is IMPOSSIBLE to achieve good health without a common sense understanding of the role of Functional Medicine.

Really impressed with the interviewer. Great question, he listens and doesn't interrupt.
  • I have a neighbor who is 98 and takes no meds. She eats a health diet and doesn’t eat a lot. Oats are her favorite food. She’s eats one or Two small bowls daily . Loves veggies and fruits and only eats minimal amounts of meat or sea food. Here’s the kicker! She has been drinking plain old tap water her whole life . She won’t even allow me get her a water filter . I’m so confused 🤷🏻‍♀️ maybe she’s the exception

About depression ❤very very true. Myself daughter has lupus which made her extremely fatigued. The psychologist insisted she had depression and was trying to force us to give her antidepressants. We had to fight back. We asked her to look into my daughter’s chronic health condition and we could find ways of helping her but she was insisting and that was it. We stopped seeing her and took matters in our hands. Now two years after my daughter is in awesome shape. We eat healthy and have activities for her and the family ❤❤❤
