7 options for a Kamala Harris VP pick

Published 2024-07-24
Vice President Harris remains on a fast track to the 2024 Democratic nomination – a virtual vote could make it official as early as next week. That means she will need to pick her running mate very soon. We started to talk through some possible VP picks on Tuesday and now return to the studio to hear how Aaron Blake’s reporting and analysis have led him to zero in on seven options. He and Elahe Izadi dig further into what potential candidates would – and wouldn’t – bring to a Democratic ticket with Harris at the top.

Today’s show was produced and mixed by Rennie Svirnovskiy. It was edited by Renita Jablonski.

  • MN Gov Tim Walz is a great leader and has served in the Reserves

Dems have a great bench to choose from. My favorites for VP are Buttigieg, Shapiro, and Kelly, but Harris can't really go wrong with any of the names mentioned in this podcast.
  • I know he probably doesn't have one chance in a million, but I really like Admiral McRaven! He gave THE BEST college commencement address I've ever heard at Texas a few years ago (it's available on YouTube), and I've admired him ever since. That said, I think her best options are Shapiro or Kelly. Let's get this done, and on with the fight!

Tim Walz must be the guy he has the broadest appeal to me.

She absolutely must have PA. Shapiro is the safest bet. 19 electoral votes is a lot.

I would prefer Mark Kelly over the other candidates because he has a engineering background not a law background we don't need two lawyers on the ticket we need somebody who can talk about the technical things that we need to do to solve climate change and other technical problems that Mark Kelly would be able to talk to about in detail. But I don't want to see him not be the senator from Arizona because he plays a role there and we don't want to lose that seat to a Republican if somebody else beats out a Democrat to take the seat for the next 4 years. Another alternative that is as good as Mark Kelly is his twin brother Scott Kelly. He is also an astronaut also an ex navy pilot aircraft carrier pilot In addition he has a very pro Ukraine position in the world at this point. He's an EMT from the time he was in high school. He's just not in politics right now which in a way makes it better. Eat somebody that could do the job as well as his brother. And then you'd have two Kelly's in positions of power. That would be a good thing.

My personal choice would be Buttigieg, but I can see where Kelly may be the choice.

Some really good candidates that you mentioned. Admiral McRaven would be my dream choice, but I don't think it will ever happen.

They are such a deep bench of Democratic leaders to be proud of. However, I am leaning towards Shapiro in Pennsylvania, which is a battle state
