On April 16, 2014, the #MVSewol #ferry capsized near the southwestern shores of #SouthKorea, with 476 passengers on board, including 325 pupils on a school trip. Very few of them survived because they obeyed the order to stay in their cabins while the ferry was #sinking. Beyond the human tragedy, with 304 lives lost, the disaster sparked widespread social and political upheaval in South Korea. Seven years on, FRANCE 24's team reports on how the terrible event has changed the country.

The Captain left the ship but everyone else was told to stay ? What a coward !

That teacher is a great bloke. Teaching the kids to think for themselves and fight the brainwashing. If he’d been on the boat a lot more of the students might have lived. Korea needs more people like him.
  • I have said it before and I’ll say it again, I am living for those children, I used to take life for granted and I used to want to take my own life but when this happened, I promised that I would live for them. I may have never known them but their deaths really broke my heart and it still hurts. May they all Rest In Peace. 🕊💜

The worst part is that they told the parents that everyone had been saved. I can't imagine that pain.

"If only they hadn't obeyed orders!!!" Even a kid knows that what the authorities did was so so so wrong.

I lost my cousin on this ferry. 4th floor just 6 doors away from the main hallway. She saved her friends instead of leaving
  • So courageous of that girl to want to save other people through nursing then firefighting after such trauma...Admirable young lady ❤️👍🇬🇧
  • 2 hours plus to sink & they couldn't even save the kids!!! So heartbreaking...
  • These poor people were failed by their government. I cant even believe the "rescue" attempt. Its shocking to watch the incompetence.

it's interesting that they called out the passive and obedience they teach the children. and I agree that a change should be made. following instructions is important, but following your instincts especially in a life of death situation is even more important.

When something is wrong on a sea vessel, never stay below deck until you know exactly what is going on. You feel a degree of listing, get a lifejacket on and get moving.

Even with cultural differences, it's extremely difficult to understand how a crew and captain can leave a sinking ship, without first looking after the safety of passengers. Would think that is a responsibility you've excepted and may face some day, working on and managing ship. The students staying in their cabins is at least explainable - they've been taught to respect and follow adults. The crew leaving was pure cowardice. To anyone (Korean) with more insight.. why do you think the crew left?

The crew told them to wear life jacket & stay in the cabin, what the F is this. Do they not understand that a life jacket help you to float, it doesn't help you breath underwater

13:55 even the little kid knew what was wrong, the captain messed up big time
  • I'm crying while watching this. So many young lives were lost because of negligence and irresponsibility
  • I was teaching English at a Korean middle school when this happened. It left me feeling like the school might suddenly lose most of an entire grade, the students and their homeroom teachers. If the halls were empty I felt as if my students had vanished and I wanted to be reassured that they were still there. I can't even imagine what it was like for the survivors at the Danwon High School.
  • The cause is well known, over loaded cargo, no ballast water, the second in command made a 25degree turn which made the cargo move and the centre of gravity shifted, the ship then listed at 20degrees... Water came in and the list got worse until the ship capsized.
  • When strict discipline overrides ability to think for yourself. They are taught to not question, it turned deadly
  • @NawnyaBusinaz
Life lesson? Never blindly obey authority, especially in todays world.
  • The response of the captain (telling the passengers to not move and to stay still) and the coastal guards in their rescue efforts (or the lack thereof) is so very bizarre. The ship took 2 hours to submerge fully. All those 304 passengers and crew could have been easily saved as most were wearing safety jackets and there were American and Japanese ships nearby ready to help with the rescue. .
