In the aftermath of the Dance of the Dragons, a new king Aegon Targaryen takes the Iron Throne of Westeros. Aegon III's reign is the gloomiest and most depressing in ASOIAF history. He is shown as a baby in House of the Dragon season one, and we'll have to wait to see how much of his life is covered by the HBO adaptation. Aegon the Dragonbane was melancholy to the end of his days, and his legacy is nothing compared to his sons Daeron and Baelor, a couple of the kings of all time in Game of Thrones lore.

Cregan Stark showing up, becoming hand, passing a ton of death sentences for regicide of his enemy, resigning, and fucking off back north six days later is the most Stark thing ever
  • @debater452
It's kinda a miracle that Aegon the third didn't go insane after all the horrific things he saw as a child
  • Cregan Stark arrives in kings landing, basically becomes king, imprisons people, beheads people, refuses to elaborate, goes back to the north.

Sad how Aegon III isn't remembered well despite having a relatively long, relatively peaceful and just reign. Meanwhile his son, Daeron, is seen by many as a hero although he actually didn't accomplish shit other than sending many men into a "glorious" death.
  • @ANKAMedien
Cregan Stark when everyone made peace: "Maaaaan, y'all are no fun 😒"
  • Tyland Lannister turned out to be a pretty cool dude. What happened to him was messed up. I felt so bad for Aegon and Jahaera people were always “why are they so sullen” “they should run around and play” it’s like bro they saw some messed up 💩 and lost everyone in their families how do you think they were going to act!?

I like King Aegon III. Was never intended to be a king, was forced to become one after war destroyed his family and realm, did a pretty decent job as a king and wasn't cruel, evil or tyrannical. Gloomy and emo, yes, but who wouldn't be after all of that 😅

Ya know, Aegon III and Jaehaera, as well as Gaemon Palehair all just really had some of the worst childhoods a kid could have. Family slaying one another and dying all around you, as well as your family's Dragons... And of those 3, only Aegon III would live to see adulthood. Only the likes of say, Viserys III could really even come close

I hope HOTD at least covers (or maybe they can flash-forwards) to the reunion of Aegon and Viserys. It'd be nice to end all the trauma and murderous scheming with a sweet moment.

Props to Aegon 3 for not becoming a cannibalistic psychopathic serial killer, after what he had been through, how many of us could have done that?
  • @QuinnTheGM
Definitely one of the more underrated kings in Targaryen history! He also has some of my favorite advisors in Westeros, being Tyland, Corlys (briefly), Cregan, Viserys II, and Unwin Peake (obviously the greatest hand of all time).

It’s truly a shame what happened to him,and despite all the trauma he went through he tried his best to a good king for his people but yet history won’t remember aegon the 3 favorably.
  • @not_ian5543
They probably won’t get to all of Aegon III’s reign in HotD, but it would be cool to see the reunion with him and Viserys. Have a genuinely heartwarming moment in this universe.

My favorite part of Targaryen history is after the Dance of Dragons, im a history nerd and I love reading about how the Targaryens had to deal with the lords of Westeros on the same level as them after they lost their dragons, its the most realistic period of the Targaryen dynasty and resembles real life medieval monarchies the most.

The Kermit Tully icon is a funny touch Also glad to find a lore channel that isnt just AI narration
  • I genuinely believe that Aegon III was by far one of the most competent Kings that the Seven Kingdoms ever could have needed after such a destructive civil war. He was careful with the economy as he wasn’t wasteful with tourneys or feasts, but he used that money to help the economy grow after so much was lost in the war. He wasn’t war hungry compared to others Kings, instead he was always trying to avoid conflicts whenever possible, unless it affected his family directly. He was as a prideful or devious so there wasn’t a disruptive court, unless you count individuals like Unwin Peake during his early years. Finally he create a stable succession line with his sons and brother and his children who by all accounts were odd characters, but they created great legacies for their house, except for Aegon the fourth who destroyed all that work in a matter of years. Really Aegon the Third may be remembered as a dour king, but one who did his duty in the greatest fits of depression.

Walks in to king's landing Threaten to take Old Town, Storm's End and Casterly Rock Execute traitors Gets himself a tomboy girlfriend Refuse to elaborate further Leaves
  • @jjs1300000
I think Aegon was ashamed of what Daemon did to Jaehaera’s mother, uncles and brothers. Probably why he never named any of his children after them and nor did Viserys.

12:21 This King having been depressed and traumatised showed more compassion and humanity than some of the others before and after him… and yet his legacy pales and he is remembered as the melancholic Dragonbane hmmm 🤔
