Malaysia Protests Against Philippines' Extended Continental Shelf Claim Over Sabah

The recent submission by the Philippines to the United Nations to recognize the extent of its undersea continental shelf has reignited the longstanding territorial dispute over Sabah with Malaysia. Malaysia, which has never recognized the Philippines' claim to Sabah, formally opposed the submission, asserting that it projects from the baselines of Sabah, a region Malaysia considers an integral part of its territory since the formation of the Federation of Malaysia in 1963. China's earlier protest against the Philippines' claim further complicates the matter, highlighting the regional and international dimensions of the dispute. Malaysia's rejection emphasizes its sovereignty over Sabah, asserting that the Philippines' claim lacks any basis under international law and conflicts with the self-determination exercised by the people of Sabah. Meanwhile, the Philippines' efforts to secure its maritime interests in the South China Sea, bolstered by extensive scientific research and legal backing from UNCLOS, reflect its commitment to asserting its territorial claims. The Philippines' move has broader implications, reinforcing its maritime entitlements confirmed by the 2016 South China Sea arbitration award. As regional players like China closely monitor these developments, the need for peaceful dialogue and adherence to international law becomes paramount in resolving such complex territorial disputes. • Philipines is day dreaming because Sabah has Oil and Gas. If US is not establishing bases in Philipines, this issues will not comes out.
  • @10demas
Government of Philippines not recognised Sulu Sultanate ,,so how come Philippines want to claim Sabah,,its ridiculous...
  • Bah! This Sabah thing again! Been hearing about it since I was a kid in the 80s. As a Filipino and as far as I'm concerned, let Sabah be. Let the people of Sabah decide their own destiny. After all, if its about national interests and resources ( oil and gas ) to be exploited, we all know the common man whether Filipino, Malaysian or Sabahan does not benefit. It's the corporations and the politicians who benefit, so I'm not going to get all emotional and patriotic over it. It's pointless and at the end of the day, we're all cousines ( more or less ) along with Indonesia.
  • As a Filipino I dont want SABAH to be part of Philippines 😂 We want Mindanao separate to Philippines 😂
  • THE CLAIM OF SABAH IS NOT RELATED TO CONTINENTAL SHELF DONT DISTORT THE FACTS.THE CLAIM OF SABAH IS ABOUT THE HEIR OF SULTANATE OF SULU THAT REALLY OWNS IT BY HELPING BRUNEI LONG LONG TIME AGO AND AS A GESTURE OF HELPING THEM OUT THEY GIFTED THE SULTANATE OF SULU WITH BRUNEI.
  • philippines facing huge conflict against china and its unresolved, then here we are trying to bite another neighbors because they are small country like us, is this support/deal by the US - PH government in exchange to agree batling with china? let's not forget our claim in sabah is through the sultanate of sulu which is muslim, do we respect the muslim in philippines? i'm not sure with that. muslim filipino are being discriminate.
  • Sabah is better off in Malaysia. Sabah will just be another slum or american military base under Philippines.
  • @csh.c
Sabah people choose to be with Malaysia. Get over it
  • If sabah belongs to the Philippines, then brunei can claim the entirety of Philippines.
  • The people of Sabah, the natives will never be part of Philippines. They have rights, they are not slaves or objects that can be gifted, if the natives of Sabah chose to be with Malaysia, then let it be. If Philippines is allowed to do so, then it would be unfair to many countries.
  • @laplue
Philippines don't actually focus on sabah but the eez.
  • I’m sorry but as a Sabahan, i never wish to be part of Philippines 💀 Please stop claiming our state as part of your corrupted country. No offense 😀
  • I am a Filipino, and Sabah belongs to the People who are living there. All we want is Peace towards every country around the World. Let the international Law be in Peacful talks
  • The only thing we want there is to get the oils there, not to establish government, schools, and courts.
  • I'm a Filipino and for me, there's no need to reclaim Sabah. Yeah, it's ours historically but the people in Sabah want to keep themselves as a part of Malaysia and Malaysians themselves. This dispute was comparable to China and Taiwan. We all know that Taiwan was always been part of China (West Taiwan) historically. But Taiwan don't want to be part of China so its the same logic for the people Sabah. And one more thing was, Malaysia has a federal government unlike the PH, meaning if the PH reclaimed Sabah, the resources from Sabah will likely to be concentrated to the mainland Luzon. It's evident on the situation of Visayas especially Mindanao.
  • Malaysia always claim everything in South East asia including some part of Indonesia but Malaysia doesn't exist before 🤣🤣🤣
  • Every Sabah people want Sabah to be part of Malaysia..don't want Philippines..Sabah people can speak Malay..not Philippines language
  • muslim brother and sister from Mindanao, did not forget that you are from malay ancestors. this disputed is not necessary.
