In the wake of Ultra Rewind, Vintage Henshin takes a look at a world of rare tokusatsu shows and films (or at least a good chunk of them). Highlights include the Fox Lorber Keita Amemiya tapes, THE MAGIC OF THE NINJA, the fate of THE SPACE GIANTS, and a look at the Rankin-Bass/Tsuburaya Trilogy (?!!).

Special Shoutout to the team from the HEROES THREE Podcast for helping notify me about the stealth re-release of MIRAI/CYBER NINJA! Check out their show here - heroes3podcast.blogspot.com/

  • As someone that worked in independent video stores during my college years, thanks for making me shed a nostalgic tear.

I would like to mention that The Last Dinosaur did in fact have multiple VHS releases here in the US. I have a tape copy from around 1999-2001 as part of a 5-cassette collection of old dinosaur movies. I have also seen other, older releases on Amazon which were released circa 1993 to cash-in on Jurassic Park.

Thanks for making this video! Really brought back a very specific memory: In the late '70s and early '80s KTVU Channel 2 out of Oakland California had a show called Captain Cosmic. It was hosted by Bob Wilkins dressed as the eponymous super hero. He hosted bumper sequences that introduced episodes of shows like: ULTRAMAN, SPECTERMAN, JOHNNY SOKO AND HIS FLYING ROBOT, and SPACE GIANTS. I loved these shows as a kid! So glad people still remember these things are trying to keep them alive!

I did NOT know X-Bomber had such a rad soundtrack!
  • This is beyond amazing! Congratulations! Im completely in love with the channel

Wow! You want me back in time to my childhood. I lived in rural Arkansas and we would have these little mom and pop rental stores and general stores that rented movies. Alot of times the general stores would have movies on a rotating basis, they would get some for about a month from a distributor and the ship them back and get a whole new group. They took whatever they got. Alot of it was this obscure foreign stuff and I consider myself fortunate to have been able to see some of it on vhs back in the day! This brought back alot of memories. I almost ruined the tape of Cyber Ninja by how many times I watched it, lol.

Your channel is a hidden gem on YouTube. There is loads of trash on this site but this is quality.

French dj and composer Kavinsky sampled one theme from sankuokai (also aired in france) for one of his recordings. later, kavinsky became more known by the opening theme for the movie 'Drive', one of the keystones of synthwave music.

I'm a simple guy who sees a pic of Toei's Giant Robo in a video and instinctively clicks it Btw Voyage Into Space can be seen officially on FandangoNOW using the same HD print as Comet TV's airings of the movie. It makes me hope that the movie may get an official home media release.
  • @venomouslizards
Looks like the Ivory Ape is no longer lost, somebody posted the full movie to the internet archive back in December.

I loved wonderland videos releases of spectreman big box and all. I made my mom buy me a rental copy when I was a little kid for around 80$ because I watched it so many times. I still have this VHS as well as FHEs releases of Starvengers and the Adventures of Ultraman. Everything I loved as a kid was Japanese and I didn’t even know it!
  • @o-SPECTRE-o
I had no idea 63 episodes of Spectreman were dubbed to English. I thought they only did a few! I wish they release it. I do have a limited edition Japanese’s boxset which had all the episodes inside a life size helmet.

Holy shit, I remember "Return of the Dinosaurs." There was a video rental store in my town way back in the day that had that on VHS, that and "Attack of the Super Monsters" (which I think I rented and rewound so many times I think I wore out the tape).
  • @donkrouskop1743
DAITETSUJIN 17 is so badly in need of a full US release. Such a cool show!
  • @obadel5092
Wow Starfleet was showed in pbs tv in Puerto Rico in the early 80 and today early 6am still show it .
  • @VjRobotkid
Awesome. Always wondered about how some of these weird VHS tapes came about. Thanks so much for putting together!!
  • @GOGOAKUMAN
Daaamn the French "San Ku kai" song, my all child hood !!!!
  • @a.dennis4835
I actually saw “Return of the Dinosaurs”. You see, I am big fan of Mystery Science Theater and Rifftrax (which is made by some of the people from Mystery Science Theater). One of the movies featured on Rifftrax was “Attack of the Super Monsters”. “Attack of the Super Monster” is made by the same company and done in the same style. While researching it, I found “Return of the Dinosaurs” on YouTube.

Haha I love how the “cyber” in “cyber ninja” is spelled by a calculator somehow
