When Alta Motorcycles went out of business Anton Wass saw an opening in the market. We asked him what he thinks lead to the failure of Alta and how will the Stark Future project be different.

Anton Wass is the CEO and co-founder of the exciting new Stark Future electric motorcycle company. Since their launch only a few months ago, the Stark Varg has received 5,000 orders and has become the highest selling dirt-bike model seemingly overnight. We talk about Antons history in business, the genesis of the Stark project, racing, an electric future and how a lack of sustainability is hampering the motorcycle industry. This is the debut podcast for our new European studio, so we hope to be bringing you more great content going forwards!

Ultimately it will be performance that kills gas bikes. In the right hands, E bikes are going to hole shot every single race. No gears, instant torque, back brake on the handle bar, less gyroscopic force.... The sh..t these pros are going to do on an ebike in the future is going to blow our minds.

They failed because Harley Davidson promised them funding, to the tune of 100 million dollars and had them sign a No Compete contract, where they could not seek funding from anyone else and then stalled Alta until they went broke.

Ive been really excited to see electric dirt bikes after riding a stealth bomber about 7 years ago. Ripping through the trees with an electric motor feels like you are flying. Being able to hear your mates and chuck some banter around adds a new level of fun. The torque of an electric motor is incredible. Having the option for the rear brake on the left hand is a game changer. It creates a new riding style that feels way more playful and controlled, you can tip the bike over and two wheel drift into a right hand corner like riding a MTB. I really hope these bikes make it to Aus.

I find it stupid ironic that the prior ceo of HD moved over to rivn and ford did the exact same thing to him as he did to Alta.

If I have to choose between off-road or no off-road then I choose electric but for me the engine noise 2stroke or 4stroke is part of the sport. EV won't save the planet for all the reasons stated in another reply but if it keeps tracks open due to noise issues then thst is a good enough reason.

Bro we gotta keep our 2 strokes and 4 strokes tho I love them man
  • @ozburns6935
This will never outsell the big manufacturers gas bikes

The only question I missed was about the impact of non existing clutch. A lot of riders use the clutch all the time. How is the control and ride abilities changed without a clutch?
  • @Natedoc808
Alta’s marketing was very poor for the segment of the market that is the largest which is weekend warriors who ride trails, desert... so non-track riders, because they flat out refused to answer the question about the range of the bike’s battery compared to a tank of gas in a 4 stroke. Just give us the KW:gallon equivalent. Instead they dodged it with vague answers = it became a loser
  • Alta Needed money .. Harley Davidson made them an offer then left them in Limbo until they were Desperate. HD bought out their Competition then shut them down. I see there is a German Brand that is Impressive.

Well, i hope stark is also not failing, because only got the 100$, couldn’t deliver on time, and with the recession will probably face many people who had decide to just buy another bike, or can’t afford that spending anymore.
  • @scottbabb4485
I think Anton was done speaking about Alta and why it failed. The heavy sigh said it all. He wants to talk about Stark and why it will succeed.
  • I remember they hired a famous flat tracker & wondering why. I think they got caught up in spending money on perhaps lesser advantageous pursuits than proper marketing & sales strategy. Sad because they had one of the best looking bikes ever, dare I say better looking than a Stark Varg & was well designed for good performance

@jase It's Redshift, not Redhawk (not that it matters anymore anyway). 🙂

There uk rep came to our track today for a meeting regarding installing chargers and getting a fleet of hire bikes. They ain’t messing around. The bike is awesome
