We've all had tough days at the office. But some actors, dedicated to giving it their all, took their work a few steps too far. Though these critically-acclaimed, often award-winning performances are a delight to watch, the experience of preparing for and recovering from these roles did a number on the actors involved, and left a lasting impression — not always for the positive. Here are several actors who went the extra mile for their craft…

What other actors should've made this list?

I miss Heath Ledger. His portrayal of the Joker was phenomenal, but he had the potential to do so much more.

Imagine going crazy because you were paid to pretend you were crazy

Adrien Brody & Heath Ledger is one of the worlds greatest yet most under appreciated actors. Adrien’s role in The Pianist shows his greatness as well as his performance on Peaky Blinders and Heath’s The Joker leaves me with goosebumps every time I watch the movie. Definitely both in my top five of favourite actors / actresses.

Rest In Peace Heath Ledger. You will always be The best Joker

I have wondered how actors ever remember who they really are...always pretending to be someone else.

As far as Charlie Hunnam's accent goes, people also forget that he moved to the states at 18, so that combined with having roles in which he had to use another accent makes it understandable that his English accent would get lost.

almost any role of Christian Bale would not be out of place in this list
  • I first saw Hugh Laurie in the WWI version of "Black Adder Goes Forth" with Rowan Atkinson and he was hilarious. The fact that Laurie can pull off an American accent was a big surprise to me, but at the same time it just proved that he has serious acting chops.

I honestly respect the actor of the kings speech. I actually have a stutter. all my life. it's made communication hard for most of my life. so I respect him for taking that journey.

Fun fact: Shelly Duvall (the girl from the shining) lives in my town, she's a little off but she's really nice

Probably the biggest life changing film for an actor, in this case two actors, was the 1966 film Born Free. Its two main actors, Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna played George and Joy Adamson, a couple that raised a lion cub called Elsa. The tale so affected the stars, that they went on to be instrumental in forming the world wide renown charity, the Born Free Foundation.
  • How the hell are you gonna mention Charlie Hunnam and not say one thing about Sons of Anarchy?
  • @samantha19884
I dont think Al Pacino ever abandoned character since he did Scarface lol
  • @gybx4094
That Joker was absolutely diabolical. I watched the original Batman series as a kid, but the Ledger Joker was no joke. More psychotic than Hannibal Lecter.
  • @SAGEXX309
Pure Dedication, admirable but clearly dangerous.
  • @Leah_F.
Well...this gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “selling their souls”. Actually very sad when you think about how much these people lost their true identities.
  • @WhatYouExpect
Cant remember her name but what about the woman who co starred the shining with Jack Nicolson from what I heard she almost had a mental breakdown because of it and quit acting for good after that role

    R. I. P Heath Ledger 💔 No one could ever play the same amazing role you did! 💔😖
