"I call it, Feeling my way towards infinity, a kind of meditative search for the liminal edge, where we seek that fine line between what we are and what we will become."

The Patron Saint of Knives considers the process of Knife Sharpening a kind of meditation that focuses the mind.

I get most of my abrasive belts at Supergrit.com. Econabrasives.com has leather belts and leather clad wheels and I buy most of my polishing compounds from knifemaking.com. I use these folks because they have what I need and the prices seem reasonable. I have no other connection to them. I also order trizact belts directly from China wholesale because the cost is about 1/3 of the American price, although they can be purchased in smaller quantities from Supergrit. I use a variety of belt sanders including a Delta, a Viel, and various generic Harbor Frieght models. They each have their attractions. The HB is dirt cheap and useful, the Viel is a total work hose and easily used either vertically or horizontally, and the Delta, I got at a yard sale for a song and is strong and reliable.

I've used his drop off service because it's convenient and close to home. The first blade I had done was absolutely the best edge I've ever had on a knife in 35 years!! Since that first knife I've brought him every single knife I have and I've never been disappointed. He offers very quick turn over and very reasonable price for the quality of service. I'd highly recommend dropping off a knife to see for yourself, you won't be disappointed!!!

I just got my 20 year old Henckels chef knife back from the Saint today. I immediately made onion rings, which was appropriate, because it cut so beautifully, it made me cry.

Wonderful video and demonstration. I must say, the respect you gave in handling, sharpening and packaging is definitely a step above what is normally seen today. It's great to see someone focus on the entire customer experience and not just the 'work' part.
  • Hey Rob Jones I've been using this technique for several years and the man I learned from has been using it for closer to 40. Both of our businesses have reputations for super sharp, long lasting edges. That said, yes, heat is always an issue. The first thing is make sure you are using the correct grit for the specific task. Attempting to take too much off with too fine a grit will generate heat. Other than that, it's about balancing speed and time on the belt. Practice.

Thanks for the info, i was going to look at two different sanders for verticle and horizontal, but the Viel sander sounds great. Very kind of you to share your knowledge.
  • @weanberger2
    Very well done! Professional craftsmanship!

I am moving into sharpening with a sander since I do all of my Scouts knives, at least until they learn a method for themselves. So it is imperative that speed along with a decent edge is what I need to deliver. I was impressed by the care and quality of work that you show, of course it is not easy to show years of experience in a short film but it is obvious. Thanks for posting and offering advice.

Thank you Mark! Many people shared information with me when I was trying to figure things out and they continue to share as I continue to learn. Hopefully, the learning never stops. Tormek makes a great machine and I use one often when looking for a slight concave edge on something. There's a kid in Australia who uses a wet slack belt system that looks interesting.
  • Thank you Rupert, Again, great information! I appreciate your willingness to share!

Really nice to see someone take such pride in their work.
  • Great video you are truly an artist. I sharpen allot of my knives and friends knives and they come out very sharp but I'm a complete rookie compared to the skill and attention to detail that you possess

A master of a forgotten craft. I appreciate what you do sir and admire your skill.

Great Video - very nicely done! Education of the public is always a good thing especially in a profession like ours. I use a pair of Tormeks with 220 AO & 4000 Japanese water stone to avoid the airborne metal dust. I still use a belt sander for garden tools, but try to minimize dust exposure due to allergies and other health concerns. Congrats on a well produced educational video!
