1950s.
In the 1950s, Korea suffered great destruction due to the Korean War, which broke out on June 25, 1950. Although the war officially ended with an armistice on July 27, 1953, the destruction caused by the war left deep scars across the country, with widespread destruction of infrastructure and industry.
In the 1950s, the Korean automobile industry was in its very early stages. Most cars were imported, and domestic car production was minimal. Korea's first car was a vehicle named 'Sibal' manufactured in 1955, which was a modified vehicle based on a jeep left behind by the American military.
In the late 1950s, Korea's economy began to gradually rebuild, which also increased demand for automobiles. However, the automobile industry during this period was mainly limited to basic activities such as assembly, and it was not until the 1960s that it began to move toward full-scale automobile manufacturing.
1960s.
In the 1960s, Korea's automobile industry was in its infancy. At that time, foreign cars were either imported or assembled and sold. Representative brands included Kia Motors and Hyundai Motors, with Hyundai producing its first model in 1967. Although the automobile industry did not achieve significant growth during this period, it gradually grew through the 1970s to form the current Korean automobile industry.
1962.
1962 was an important time for the Korean automobile industry. Lee Hae-gwang Factory (now Ssangyong Motors) produced the first automobile in Korea, and Hyundai Motor Company also produced its first model in the same year. 1962 is remembered as an important time when the Korean automobile industry began.
Domestic car development period
1972 was a time when the development of domestic cars accelerated in Korea. At this time, Hyundai Motor Company introduced the first domestic passenger car called Pony, and Kia Motors also developed Korea's first diesel engine. These efforts led to the growth and development of the Korean automobile industry, and the 1970s are remembered as an important period in the development of domestic automobile technology
