My drift miata with a Chevy 350 bursts into flames

motivation and reason for v8 swap in miata?
google, youtube, meet, and ride with Danny George.

My name is shawn prince and i am 23 years old. I was/am building a Mazda miata drift car powered by a small block Chevy 350. I was super excited to start it.... I could not start with exhaust manifolds because they would not fit. I have to make my own.... But aside from that, I mounted in the car, via modified subframe and hooked a hoist on the rear to keep the engine level.... I hooked up all the fuel lines and gave it a go.... Resulted in a horrendous fire where I got 1st and 2nd degree burns all over my left arm and leg...the reason for the fire is ignition timing was off and fuel pressure at the regulator was too high.... I killed fuel and spark and I kept turning the engine over so it would suck the fire back into the engine therefore extinguishing the fire but that didn't work and I did not have a fire extinguisher so I grabbed the hose.

Oh and btw: the engine is not on a hoist..... it is on a subframe which is bolted to the car...... i have the hoist holding the back of it to hold the distributor away from the firewall and to keep the engine level since i did not have the transmission hooked up to support it.

I like how he tries blowing on it to make it stop

no no your doing it wrong, engines are supposed to be internal combustion not  external  :p
  • I want to say thank you, sincerely, many would delete the video to ward off embarrassment. Putting it up on youtube is a bold move and we've all had are moments. Don't take it down, it shows what can go wrong in the tuning world and is a funny lesson to the viewer. Respect to you. +1

A spark? Let me just keep trying to start it. It's on fire! Let me keep trying to start it that'll put it out. Oh no! More flames? Let me just abruptly grab the gas can.

Warning 1 Sparks. Warning 2 Fuel can near sparks. Warning 3 no fire extinguisher. Just lol.....no idea why you started blowing at a fire like that. Only makes it worse.... Glad you were able to put it out though. Think safety next time :)

Soon as sparks started to emit i would have stopped cranking it and solved that problem.

Glad the kid is ok, I can't for the life of me imagine why he kept trying to start it after it was on fire.
  • And the carburetor’s single flame is just singing happy birthday lol 🔥
  • @LawrenceGerman
Yep, a $20 Fire Extinguisher would have save you so much drama. Well I hope the build works out. Be sure to post the final project.
  • Legend has it that the engine is still on fire to this day. He'll have a great story to tell friends and family 10-20 years from now -- assuming the engine fire goes out and hasn't killed him by then. We all gotta learn the basics somehow. Good Luck on the build!
  • I love while he's blowing on the fire another just goes FOOM!! then all hell breaks loose literally

MASSIVE respect for you man.. You could have hidden this and escape the "cyber embarrassment" and the "net expert mechanics", but you didn't and you showed to us all what can go horribly wrong with home-built rides. Just ignore the bad comments and push forward, one learns from one's mistakes. Best wishes!

Sometimes, when I think about how bad my build is going, I like to look back to the video and tell myself, “at least it’s mot that bad.”
  • So many things went wrong in this video. It’s a miracle that he is still alive

man that exactly hapenned to us when we were welding something on the car and suddently it caught a fuel line. so horrible, glad u got it taken down
