It has been 20 years and it is still the best medieval battle movie ever made.

Mel Gibson is an incredible film maker. Apocalypto should have won an Oscar as well.

He's easily one of the best directors the industry ever produced. His ability to create jaw dropping realism, his fine attention to detail, his amazing insight into the cultures he depicts on screen... his work is phenomenal.

I still cannot believe James Horner did not win an oscar for his Braveheart score.
  • It has been 26 years! Braveheart and Mel Gibson are still legendary !
  • Saw Hacksaw Ridge last night. 10/10 masterpiece. So glad Mel is back behind the camera. Cinema is better off with him making movies.

Braveheart is an absolute masterpiece.Gibson changed the historical epic genre forever, just like Nolan changed the comic book movie  genre.A true artist of directing .He repeated the labour (twice)with the Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto(EDIT:Hacksaw Ridge too).He "studied" the old epics (Ben-Hur,Big Country,Lawrence of Arabia,Spartacus etc.),he "learned"  some things from his past Directors ,the sensitivity of Peter Weir, the super action hyper violent realism  of George Miller and Richard Donner ,Zeffirelli's recreation of classical themes and added his amazing novelties and ideas using authentic languages, Violence like no other(cause Reality is violent)  and he tried to give an intense feeling of Reality to old Worlds. He made historical epics that are similar to Italian neo-Realism ..and this master Director some day will give us more masterpieces like these...Live STRONG Mel!

Mel and Braveheart totally deserved to win that year. It was a great race. I mean, Apollo 13, The Usual Suspects and Babe, all in the same year? And, Braveheart to beat them all. Screw the haters.
  • @Avatarare
He so deserved the Oscar! He did a hell of a job directing the film and his acting was spectacular! Mel Gibson is one of my all time favorite directors and actors! Completely stunning!

Hacksaw Ridge was a masterpiece and Gibson deserves an Oscar for that one. What he did with that film is absolutely amazing and the Academy should actually put aside their issues, and recognize the man. They gave an Oscar and a standing ovation to Roman Polanski, so Gibson is all right. In the times we are living in a film like Hacksaw Ridge is a story of hope that deserves to be recognized for what it is - a masterpiece.

say what you will about mel Gibson. He did a great job directing this film.

Braveheart arguably gave us the first and last 'proper' (i.e. non CGI) realistic medieval battle scenes in film. 20 years later - my God I can't believe it! - and they are not diminished. That moment of impact when the English cavalry smashes into the Scots' army's crude pikes (during the first battle) is still absolutely breath-taking. He deserved the Oscar for that scene alone. And now I have to go and watch it!

This is great but Mel should have been nominated for A Year of Living Dangerously (1982), Braveheart (1995) and Forever Young (1992) as an actor
