I didn't take a traditional route to success in software, and I have three hot takes that I've developed after years as a senior engineer that I wish I would have known when I was first getting started.

Additionally, I combed through some data from the bootcamp I attended to get you access to useful information like average salaries, average + median time to hire, and average job hunt satisfaction so that you can enter the job hunt prepared and with reasonable expectations.

  • Thanks for making this great video. It made more sense to me than just about any other one I’ve watched, which is quite a few 😅 Very genuine and insightful.

Thanks for your thoughts and story! It calmed me down a bit on the way to my career. In the end, I still only see myself in IT, but the level of competition somewhat scares me. The only thing that bothers me is not that I can't be a developer, but that I might end up being needless as a specialist.
  • Hi Jordan, first of all I'd like to congratulate you on your career! I'm from Brazil and my English isn't very good, but I was able to understand most of your video. I'm starting to study programming now and I'm very lost, in the sense of what to learn. You talked about starting with web development, and that's exactly what I'm doing, but I'm really interested in the back end. In my case, what would you recommend I study? HTML, CSS, JS + framework? And then learn the back end?

Glad you survived. If you had only a few dollars to your name how did you afford Maslow basics like shelter, warmth, food, clothes never mind all the other things like travel expenses, equipment, electicity, internet access, learning resources?
