The model displayed makes it looks like the trachea and the esophagus are one! They are separate structures. Getting stomach fluids in your lungs is only possible when it enters your mouth first (by vomiting), followed by inhaling the fluids which will lead them into the lungs.

If it's planned surgery then the American Society of Anesthesiologist guidelines recommend not to eat solid foods for up to 8 hours. However, the recommendations for clear liquids are only 2 hours before surgery. If you are getting surgery then talk to your anesthesiologist or surgeon. It may be ok to consume coffee without milk, juices without pulp and popsicles, or water up to 2 hours before surgery. This helps to prevent dehydration and low blood sugar and does not increase the risk of aspiration pneumonia in most cases. Many cases of vomiting happen during induction which is while the patient is being put to sleep which would be before the anesthesiologist would place a gastric tube if they choose to. Also, placing a gastric tube is not routinely done in all cases as it's not always necessary. Aspiration pneumonia has the potential to cause respiratory failure. As little as a couple of tablespoons of stomach contents in the lungs can be detrimental. I hope that clears some stuff up.
  • Interesting. I didn't know about the small tube for draining the stomach.
  • oh wow... & here to think i thought it was so you didn't fart during surgery (or shit the operating table) 😂

Those years that I worked in the OR as a nurse, never even saw stomach tube being used...But this video is USA and I live in other side of the world so maybe there is differences

But why patient can't eat or drink before surgery which involve spinal anesthesia as spinal anesthesia is just a local anesthesia ?
  • @mrsNetty34
You need an empty stomach to avoid vomiting and aspiration
  • So if they suck whatever is left out of your stomach anyways, why do you need to fast?
  • I watch first time and i get clearly understand😉😉 thank you for this video

The music - why have it so loud? (Or why is the voice so quiet?) Perhaps the music should be nill by ear at the start of the video?

yooooo just hate hella and iv got surgery in a couple of hours
  • You stated "after" the procedure. Nothing to do with during the procedure. After the "procedure, you are in a "recovery" bed and not under anesthesia. So, again, I ask WHY nothing after 00:00? Especially, when the procedure is at 16:30.
