Watch the BBC first on iPlayer 👉 bbc.in/iPlayer-Home Simon meets with Amy, one of the tens of thousands of homeless people living in L.A. Unlike others, Amy has chosen a particularly precarious place to settle: inside a train bridge.

Simon Reeve continues his journey through the Americas. In this second leg, Simon is in the United States travelling down the Rocky Mountains from Montana to Colorado. In the wide-open prairies of Montana, the cowboy way of life is under threat from a long-term decline in the rural economy, but Simon meets a former Silicon Valley executive who has envisaged a new future for the land. The hugely ambitious American Prairie Reserve is attempting to turn three million acres of former ranches, farms and public lands into a protected habitat for America’s wildlife, reintroducing iconic species long extinct, including the North American bison. It is a move being welcomed by native American groups still living under the shadow of historical injustice.

  • "It's not worth living to just pay the rent"..... Powerfull statement
  • @sudopenguin
This is heartbreaking because she was so damn polite
  • "...The closer they get, the more they want to distance themselves from it. Somehow relating(to the homeless), makes them susceptible to it." Wow, she cut to the heart of how people react to other's in her situation. Very powerful.

That's exactly how I feel about my last job. I work and I thought the money was okay, but then I realize that it was because I was living with my parents and didn't have to pay rent. Then I realize if I paid rent, I'd be left with just enough to eat and just enough to survive my next paycheck, rinse and repeat but going nowhere and I'd keep doing it until I retire. That thought alone made me really ponder my whole life. Just because you're alive doesn't mean you're really living.

This is sad she’s sound like a really kind person .

Most ordinary people are just a few strokes of bad luck away from being homeless.
  • This lady is brave. I'd be scared to death sleeping in that tunnel every night. Even if I had to. But she seems confident in herself. Especially with her doggy with her. Glad they have each other.
  • @TexasProducer
I believe in hard work , but I also believe what she said is true. You shouldn’t have to work 60 hours a week just to live
  • @1Kent
I've been homeless, it's a very very deep hole to climb out of.
  • @joeswanson2718
She seemed like a very capable and intelligent woman that is just stuck in a bad situation.
  • @ariwisata7203
I love how the way she explains her condition. I hope she will be ok with her best friend. Damn I'm crying.
  • @fleetSRT
"Welfare is something America doesn't understand anymore" no truer words have ever been said.
  • @BatJeff
She sounds so well spoken, and so kind. Absolutely awful that anyone is living like this in the 21st century in a first world country.
  • @vinvoltron3672
Truly is a shame..... She sounds intelligent and seems like a very gentle soul. Hope she is doing ok.
  • She is a lot more intelligent and articulate than many politicians in the US right now... She comes off as a person that would be great as a teacher... she certainly taught us something here... wish her all the best...
  • @jimp8400
God bless her… she has a great heart, taking care of her dog even with what she is dealing with.
  • People always joke about a monster under a bridge but there’s a beautiful soul under this one
  • She’s so articulate. Wow. Wish her and her pup the best.
  • That lady is sweet and deserves a chance to live normally, just like many others who seem factionless
  • You forget how precious each human being is... Until you see their artwork and smile. 🥺
