Building a Beautiful Log Sauna (Start to Finish)

Published 2021-07-28
I show you how to build a complete sauna from start to finish using a metal culvert.

The sauna is covered with dead harvested cedar with the frame formed by a metal culvert. The ends are sided with ash wood harvested from a tree nearby cut to 1/2 inch thickness on a portable sawmill. Insulation is off cast, so bought for cheap, and the studs are from discarded pallet wood. Subscribe for part 2 where we work on the inside of the sauna.

"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.

  • This is the full build, it will make it easier to follow the complete project as the original was put out in several parts. Enjoy!
  • It's incredible seeing this torn up plot of land turning into an amazing homestead over the course of time. You guys do amazing work, keep it up! Have an off the grid village at this rate lol
  • As a North Carolinian who hates the heat, 75 is definitely "sauna weather" for me 😂 especially right now as cold as our winter has been lately Id be glad for a nice 75 degree sauna lol

You are using my moniker: there are no problems only solutions, I have lived my whole life this way. You are the first one I've ever heard use this phrase and live by this. Your videos are amazing, I love the humor, many blessings Elle and Colorado 🌹🙏🌍
  • @reedharshman7903
You need your own television series of what you do because you are a model homesteader
  • You obviously have a lot of experience in the "trades" and I really appreciate your ability to explain what you're doing and "why". The smart ash sarcasm and side remarks make it even better. Keep it up.

I enjoyed watching this build from start to finish and I'm sure I'm gonna enjoy this also. Putting the whole build in one video with an hour and 22 mins long is a bonus 👍🇵🇭
  • @FunfindersX
That Don was completely dangerous on ice His stick hanging ROCKED!!!!!!!!! Nice job Don Cheers
  • The whole time you’re explaining the technical details I’m going “huh”. I was definitely at the back of the class and cried through math class! But! I enjoyed every minute of your efforts. Have you thought of using your “village” as a B & B, I’m sure a night in the cube then sauna, all the things you’ve suggested would find a market. What a super place for your adorable girl to grow up in. 🥰🇨🇦
  • @Cataracta
Wonderful Sauna.. i used to go to Finland and enjoy it every day.. i missing it so much. I appreciate that you always elaborate your thinking and reasoning behind it, not just building without explaining the context. :)

Mr. Cumberbatch did it again! What an amazing build! Your ingenuity deserves millions of viewers!
  • @Sinceretic
the word you're thinking of is löylyä :) as a Finn I approve of this sauna
  • Tracking some phrases I enjoyed. “I’m more stubborn than the … (log)” “Things were easier when I was a kid” “Do your best and grind the rest.” “Think beyond your nose.”
  • You got your own little village shaping up nicely..so cool to see the journey.

Did not know that you had your own channel until I stumbled on this video during a rainy day search of YouTube. Like how you used items that you found or were given to improve the build, especially the old boiler. That sauna is a beauty! Now I have to watch other vlogs of yours to catch up! I am a scavenger myself, of items that others throw to the curb, that I realize may have some use left in them, or that I can adapt to my own uses. Being retired and on a tight budget, necessitates that attitude. I absolutely hate seeing good wood thrown away - I have louvered folding doors on my basement workshop and my wife has laundry cabinets, and a sewing cabinet that I improvised from a discarded bathroom vanity, all found at the curb.

Thank you for bringing my childhood dreams to life with all these amazing builds. 🤩 …plus watching you all roll a giant metal pipe through the woods has extremely high entertainment value. 😂
  • you guys got so much more to look forward to in USA than we got in South Africa. i enjoy projects like you doing too but it could cost me R100000s of randsfor each 1 of yours here. So truly enjoy and think of me too while you busy. God bless you all...
  • Love all the Builds in the village ! Especially the sauna. Can't wait for the hot tub build.
