Silicon anode technology means very bad news for fossil fuel technology. Let’s not deny the fact that that battery makers have indeed made a lot of headway into creating new safer, and higher performing batteries. We’ve had Chinese giant CATL showcasing a sodium-ion battery, then there is American startup QuantumScape with a first commercial solid-state battery. Even Nissan has jumped on to the bandwagon announcing their prototype for full scale production of solid-state batteries but nothing could have prepared the industry for the advent of silicon anode tech. It could well be a game changer considering how dominating the conventional graphite anode technology is. To enlighten you, now nearly all battery tech relies on graphite anodes which is expensive and not very environment friendly. With silicon anodes you achieve safety, explosive power and you get a product that will not have a negative impact on the environment.
Graphite and raw materials for anodes in lithium-ion batteries are now largely sourced from Asia. The decision to abandon graphite is not solely motivated by the fact that it has reached the limit of its possible performance in batteries. We are in the midst of what can only be defined as a graphite supply crisis, which is posing a serious danger to the worldwide battery supply chain. Aside from lithium, graphite is the only substance that all current lithium-ion batteries rely on. Graphite is an underappreciated component of lithium-ion batteries, yet the amount needed for today's batteries is enormous. Tesla's Model S batteries have up to 85 kg of graphite in them, but grid storage requires significantly more. To put it another way, the graphite anode is a huge portion of the li-ion battery equation. Where does graphite originate from, though? Is there a distinction between graphites? Why is it so difficult to get away from graphite?

  • Enovix corp. is first to market with a silicon based anode. Although they aren't specifically focusing on EVs their battery tech impresses me the most.

  • what is Gratomic doing - they intended to be the go to graphene company - BUT are focussed on graphite. I do not understand why Gratomic inc stock is not going viral.

    green burnables are not considered as fossil fuels, brown burnables could be the fossil fuels, green are the fast growing weeds in the yard you occupy
  • No mention of charging safety and fire safety ...combustion risks... The insurance companies are already getting very twitchy about Li Ion batteries on boats because of the number of fires that have been occuring.. often being used in devices and E powered water toys like jet skis surfboards and underwater scooters. 😬 At millions a pop an uncontrollable battery or charging fire makes the insurance industry very risk averse.
