South African Steam: 25NC 3407 to Cullinan - Epic Wheelslip starts a fire!

2015-01-13に共有
A rare visit by a 25NC to Cullinan - 25NC 3407 hauls a wedding charter to Cullinan, and proceeds to get stuck on the turning triangle. Some serious wheelslip follows - the wedding ceremony apparently seriously interrupted by the volcanic eruptions just outside the church! Some of the guests even came outside to watch and take photos...

  • 2.30: watching the flames lick in and out around the spinning wheel. INCREDIBLE!
  • Don't they know that when a loco slips there are two things that should be in mind, either it is pulling too many carriages than it can pull on a step gradient, or the load is heavier than expected. It could also mean a brakes air hose or two could have disconnected on one of the cars (carriages). Slipping makes the situation worse because it wear out both wheels and tracks. If this locomotive had less carriages, would it still slip at this zone? Maybe not. Why? Because the load is lighter. That means, on this line the locomotive can only pull that many loaded carriages without slipping. In this videowe see it slipping but how did it happen. Has any slipping occurred in the past with this train at this area? If so, what has been done about the old boy? Continued slipping will destroy its drive wheels and if over loaded the locomotive boiler could explode.

If they'd waited until a decent section of track had been gritted before attempting to start, they'd have probably got some lasting traction. The loco was OK on each shovel-full and them slipped to a halt on the next ungritted bit.
  • I guess that's a lot of damage to the tracks and to the locomotive wheels.
  • 4:45 Must be a NOVICE on the throttle. How difficult is it to "kill throttle" after wheels are slip, slip, slipping?
  • I have never seen such a wheel slip .In India we have Baldwin USA on main broad gauge lines which are in service to till 1994 and TELCO with Yokohama Japan on metre gauge lines never witnessed such in India
  • Slipping/skiding of steamer wheels maybe a problem .It is observed when engine gets started. This steam engine has set of 4 drive wheels. It may have maximum speed 120kmph.Thanks.

Very sad to see this loco today, or whats left of it at Worcester
  • Scrap the relics 🚂🚃of past. go electric 🚋🚊locomotive. avoid global warming and🐒💭 pollution. 😭.fan
