Bei den Titeln ihrer Alben hat die Band ein Faible für Farben. Und auch musikalisch geht es bei den Progressive Metallern von Baroness kunterbunt und frei zu: Songstrukturen werden regelmäßig aufgebrochen und neu zusammengesetzt, Genres unkonventionell miteinander kombiniert.
Ein Konstante zieht sich auf jeden Fall durch die Karriere von Baroness. Was die Auswahl der Titel ihrer Alben angeht, hat die Progessive-Metal-Band ein Faible für Farben. „Red Album“, „Blue Record“, „Yellow & Green“ und „Purple“ heißen die Tonträger der Musiker aus Georgia. So abwechslungsreich Baroness bei der Farbpalette in Bezug auf ihre Tonträger unterwegs sind, so kunterbunt und frei gestalten sie auch seit eh und je ihren Sound.
Auf „Gold & Grey“, ihrem Album aus den Jahr 2019, brechen sie konsequent konventionelle Songstrukturen auf. Strophe-Refrain-Strophe ist eine Möglichkeit, aber keinesfalls ein Muss. Baroness kriegen es auch hin, auf ein minutenlanges Intro oder ein ebenso mächtiges Outro zu setzen – und zwischendurch den einen oder anderen emotionalen Haltepunkt zu setzen.
Auch bei ihrem Klangkosmos setzen Baroness auf Freidenkertum: Mit Progressive Metal als Basis haben sie auch ein Händchen für filigrane Momente und zarte Melodien – um hernach darauf ein dickes Metal-Brett zu zimmern. Man höre „Cold-Blooded Angel“, das sanft gesungene Duett zwischen Kreativ-Direktor John Dyer Baizley und Gitarristin Gina Gleason. Danach weiß man: Baroness können ihr Farbenspiel auch in dunkelbunt schön.
