seems like he got the wrong metric. I think SAM/TAM is more like a metric for acquisition instead of adoption. Correct me if I am wrong. Also he did not answer the question how to achieve the goal (allowing more users to use it let the snowball effect/network effect play its magic does not sounds like a good answer)

In real life interviewer wouldn’t be 1% as proactive as this guy here

To be fair to the interviewee, the question at 15:30 went beyond “How do you identify the goals for FB lite” and into HOW to act against the goals, which is more about strategy/execution/roadmap .
  • The main Facebook app is a data guzzler. I have a powerful phone but I installed Facebook Lite because I felt it would keep the data consumption to a minimum. Data is not cheap in the west - you get a few GB per month in the US/Canada whereas you can get 1.5 GB of data daily in India (probably won't last too long but for now, mobile data is not limiting). So I feel like Facebook Lite could be an option even for those with access to good phones and better bandwidth. Especially if you are traveling and you are on mobile data, you may want to switch to the Lite version. I don't know if Facebook is already doing it but they should be able to detect if the user is on WiFi or mobile data, and provide an appropriate experience. Facebook Lite is a great option in places where broadband connectivity is hard to come by but a hybrid of Lite and the main app would serve everyone well. My views are probably clouded by my personal experience so if I were a PM for Facebook Lite, I would definitely be thinking along these lines. Great discussion, btw. Thanks for doing this.

this was terrible. would love to see you guys ask this type of question again to someone who actually has a framework i could learn from.

super useful video! PM interviews have a lot of unique things and you addressed one of the must-ask here!
  • For mature product, I would focus on engagement metrics like MAU. so we provide best experience for users and they recommend other users to join-in for snowball effect.

i personally felt that this solution was a little sloppy. I felt like the interviewer had to probe him with questions whereas i feel that the candidate should be leading the conversation a little more.
  • @arkafon79
I feel like there should have been more structure to the answers, and to setup expectations and the map for the answers. Also, the interviewer seemed to be pulling the interviewer along, basically helping and guiding

Very helpful! Thank you! I wonder how long would usually be a good pause time for us to think before answering?
  • @maspring415
How would you break down a question like: Should Facebook enter the dating / jobs market?
  • @neevaspeaks5483
Hi Stephen, is there any video on GTM Marketing Role? If so, please share the link. I got interviewed with the one of the prime of IT/ITes companies worldwide, and got rejected after 3rd round. Now, I don't intend to rant about wrong screening by TA when hiring mgr decides to have the personnel be an expert on integrated marketing campaigns. What's shocking is, I got a feedback that I will be a great fit for Project management, which leaves me so confused right now. I am far far way from being on the Project management team, my core expertise lies in account management and marketing campaign operations, upgraded with CSPO (product owner) certification. If anyone, can suggest why would an interviewer give a remark which is not even close to the reality? Am I sending wrong clues, what could be those?
  • @prashantwagle
Would this approach have been successful in an actual interview?
  • I really like your videos. Can you do more mock interviews for Technical PM roles?
  • It's wrong to say that FB lite is targeted for people in developing countries. Internet connectivity and economic growth of a country are two mutually exclusive things. In a real interview, this could spark an entirely different conversation.
