Venezuela Election: Maduro wins, Opposition Alleges Widespread Fraud

Venezuela's National Electoral Council (CNE) has announced the victory of President Nicolas Maduro in the presidential election. Maduro has won a third six-year term with 51.2% votes with 80% of ballots counted. The CNE said opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez had got 44.2% votes. The opposition alliance has alleged widespread fraud as their bid to unseat Maduro after 11 years in power failed. The opposition claimed that its witnesses at polling stations were forced to leave. It had deployed witnesses to be able to get its own vote count. The opposition supporters were also asked to keep a vigil at voting centres. The measures were taken amid fears of the government’s bid to steal the vote. Earlier, Independent polls suggested Gonzalez’s wide lead over Maduro, whose socialist PSUV party has been in power for 25 years. Maduro is accused of harassing the opposition & raising authoritarianism.
