This Bed is made from Walnut and is designed to suit a queen sized mattress. The intention behind the headboard design was to create a ‘blank canvas’ where I could add in a unique element that would really set this bed a part from anything else I had seen and the multiple iterations is proof that this headboard was truly a blank canvas for different ideas to occur.
To be honest I think headboard idea no.2 is actually my favourite as it is subdued and probably more appropriate for the bedroom, which is a place to relax but, design number 3, although somewhat intense, does represent a new technique for me, not the steam bending but the method of using multiple strips of wood to create flowing curves. Once again this has been inspired by one of my favourite furniture designers Joseph Walsh.
Now you may think that the thin strips of wood from design no.3 are fragile, but due to the intense curves, this structure is under enough tension and has enough support from its adjacent curve to have more than enough rigidity.
One thing I didn't make clear in this video is that the original client and I had discussed a ball park estimate for the bed before I began designing, now granted my quote came in at the higher end of the estimate, this number still shouldn't have come at a surprise. Also the details to the headboard where added for me, these were not part of the original design for the client.
If you’re interested in knowing more about the steam bending process I go into detail about it in a video on Patreon. I also have a shop update where I show how I fixed the curves to the headboard.
As always thank you so much for your support here on YouTube. The fact that you even watch my videos means I can continue to make more unique builds and share them with you. An if you haven’t already, please consider subscribing as this will help my videos to get pushed out to more and more people.

Now you hear me talk about Patreon a lot. It’s actually the main way that I can financially support this channel and continue to provide free videos here on YouTube. I digest hours of woodworking content each week. There’s no one producing projects this nice while also providing a ton of value to hobbyists and other professionals. Keep up the good work

Frankly, I LOVED all three headboard designs - especially how they looked in the lighting as you showed them off. The stipple pattern looked incredible with the finish on, the charred wood looked like it would fit perfect in a New York Penthouse apartment, but the curved piece you ended up choosing just looks like a priceless piece of art. I can understand why you weren't happy, until you reached that point, since the piece was for you. I think a paying client would have been happy with any of the three headboard options.

Those curves are absolutely gorgeous, I saw how particular you were in curving and spacing, but I had no idea how much better they would look with some shaving, rounding, and in their finished depth of colour. I can't imagine getting a piece like this commissioned. Way out of my budget, but I hope one day I can have a piece in my home with the same heart put into it.

Nothing in this build looks bad, but the bent wood is in my opinion simply stunning and mesmerizing! Wonderful work!
  • @user-lk6mj6dz8t
That is the coolest build I've ever seen. I know there was a lot of frustration over the first two iterations not coming out as you liked, but that end video showing the completed bed with three different variations was so visually satisfying. Absolutely Incredible.
  • @SylvainBellerose
Got shivers looking at the final result. Absolutely breathtaking. Also. The video composition of all the alterations of the bead head detail was also a stroke of genius.
  • @kimberlywoodford
I like that you showed all the variations you made.. Allows all of us to see that you in fact made the right choice. Looks beautiful. Wow.
  • @STPMN
The video editing and photography has become almost as incredible as the design and workmanship! Absolutely incredible!!
  • @TeknoMage13
Honestly, I liked all three headboard options. The curved one is the most impressive, however I think the charred wood was my favorite because once the finish was applied the contrast was no longer overwhelming like it initially was during test fitting.
  • @jessegalt2283
Very elegant choice for filling the void in the headboard. Stunning finished product. Thanks for sharing your process.

Nick, your work always amazes me. I love the fact that you believe “You Never Know Unless You Try” approach. Never give up, press on, that’s what make us a true woodworker.

I can’t say how much I loved this video!! My brother passed away a year ago. Seeing the work you do brought back so many memories of the way my brother worked with wood. Your bed frame is beyond beautiful! The words you used to describe your work and passion were perfect. Thank you for making that beautiful bed frame.
  • @ljsings6011
The first two headboard designs looked good but had something reminiscent of lips or a mouth. The final design is absolutely out of this world! Speechless.
  • @peterbreese2575
Absolutely love it, all three head board designs make the bed a different one all together
  • @smopoo
This is the best woodworking channel on YouTube. The skill, the equipment, the drama, the shots... Pure entertainment and yet every episode is a learning experience. Phenomenal work!
  • @berndstrauss151
You are just beyond nuts....the version with the curves is just breathtaking. I really like the style of the video as well. Well done to the rest of the piece.
  • @rickydowling2920
That bed is beautiful. Love your content and your no BS approach in explaining your thought process. Your honesty shines through like a light house in a sea of fake. You are an artist in furniture making.
  • @jakovbrizic
I've been on a woodwoorking youtube binge for the last few months. Fell in that hole by accident and couldn't get out, spiralling down that wormhole of cabinets, guitars, butcher blocks, furniture, toys, etc... I've seen the best what youtube had to offer. You are one of three, if not the only one, thats in a league of their own. And I'm not saying that lightly. The skill, the visuals, the sounds... What Baumgartner Restorations is to art conservation, you are to woodworking. Just the cream of the crop. I salute you.
