Jamaica was once the world’s leading exporter of bauxite, which is the ore from which aluminum is made, but decades of mining have taken a toll on the land and the people. With reserves depleted, the government is now pushing to move mining operations into the most ecologically sensitive part of the island known as Cockpit Country. The people of Cockpit Country fought off the British in the 1700s and now they're conjuring the warrior spirit of their ancestors to take that fight to the mining companies.

Us Americans complain about poor people coming here to work for slave wages, yet we have our companies in most countries around the world stripping foreign mineral resources for our own benefit

Jamaica just doesn’t seem like a big enough place to accommodate mining without it having a massive negative impact on the people.

I remember visiting Jamaica when I was young....it was a beautiful place and some truly amazing people. This is not ok and my heart goes out to all those affected.
  • “Money comes, money goes…this we only have once” That gave me chills because you know he meant that with everything.
  • Wtf Why are they making new mining sites. It's literally not necessary. Not just cuz if the environmental impact but because we have so much aluminum already that needs to be recycled. I work in shipyards. They throw away so much metal. That's not including all the aluminum cans that get thrown out. And the metals the US Navy throws out. This stuff can easily be recycled and treated to whatever type of aluminum you need to use. Get a contract with these shipyards and collect their metals and process them into what you need. You can still make your money and people will still have their jobs. Stop stripping the land of resources. We have done ENOUGH!
