When people think about Jamaica and drugs, they tend to think of weed, Rastafari and reggae music.

02:00 Police protection for votes
04:40 Jamaicas join the American gang wars
07:21 Christopher “Dudus” Coke

The reality is that Jamaica sits in the middle of the cocaine corridor between South America and the US, and the violent gang wars and billions of dollars this trade generates have fundamentally shaped its history.

This violence is inseparable from Jamaica’s politics, creating a uniquely Jamaican kind of gang boss – the Don. And no Don was bigger than Christopher “Dudus” Coke. This is the story of Dudus, the drug lord who became the secret “President” of Jamaica.

As an American citizen I'll never stop saying that it is my belief that the war on drugs has been the biggest scam ever perpetrated on all of us.

If you’re not from Jamaica you wouldn’t understand the level of poverty and what type of help a man like this can give to a community
  • I worked in Kingston Jamaica for 5 yrs ... I know how the situation used to be ..I have seen Street gunfights..scary . But Jamaican people are simple, straight forward and loveble... I can't forget them.. I love them One of the most beautiful island in the world.... Land I Love...

This story has a lot more to it than most know. For one, look into who was his father. Then look at who provided the guns and continued to fund all of that crime that went on. You really think Dudus had that money himself?! He got that from the financiers of all of that! Since they are powerful people, they will try to separate themselves from the actual crimes.
  • The loyalty he commanded was insane, I remember there were people wearing signs around this time saying "Jesus died for me, and I will die for Dudus"
  • It’s so weird how Jamaica is a small yet dynamic country. I remember this but where I lived close to the tourist areas everything was peaceful and calm. While an hours drive away Kingston was tense af
  • I was and still a member of this beloved community i was there when it occurred. S.i.p to those lost their life.
  • You all do a great job of capturing all that’s taking place in these countries; I’m enjoying all the episodes.

As someone who lives in Jamaica and experienced some of this I still can't see how Dudus was such a big deal for the US government.

And ironically, the drug and gang issues got worse since his take down. Jamaica has gone down hill so much 😞
  • @jonnyh5858
Didn’t Dudus get caught and arrested at a checkpoint after hiding inside a car trunk wearing a women’s wig? You left that out!!
  • @Bellydaughter
This was the scariest time as a Jamaican but he did help many people that struggled.
  • @Abi-hx1qr
