Back in May 2018, everyone seemed to be hyping up Agony as the new big horror game of the month. Once it finally released though, players were less than pleased...

But was that fair? Does Agony deserve a 2nd chance in 2022?

Let's dive into Hell and find out!

Thanks for checking out the video! What did you think of Agony? Do you hate it as much as I do? Please do feel free to share any and all your thoughts in the comments x

Thanks for checking out the video! How did you feel about Agony? What game disappointed you the most? Let us know! 💚

I tried to play it recently, it wouldn't even start up my experience was so awful. When I did play it I couldn't make it 20 minutes without saying screw it and moving on to something else
  • Ughhhh, this game... Agony is one of those games that needed to nail (and for the most part succeeded) the hype buildup w/ controversy and edgy visual trailers in order to make a profit before the buyer's remorse set in once people played this grocery list of a game. Lovely video as always, along with being short, punchy, and to the point!

fun note about the platforming, the ending involves having to do like 3-4 jumps that should by no means be as difficult as they were but it seriously took me like 10 attempts and each failure brought me back to the beginning of the sequence which was several unskippable cutscenes and having to walk down a long ass hallway
  • I think Agony UNRATED is an extremely fun and well-made game for those like me that know how to appreciate its masterful representation of hell and how disturbing and gory the game was in general. I clarify again: I'm not speaking about Agony, but Agony UNRATED. And yes, hell its supposed to frustrate you and drive you mad. That's an accurate representation of hell, and not the ridiculous super fun action-centered hell of Doom. Regarding horror elements and its depiction of hell, Doom is hello kitty material.

as far as i remember, it was sold as The Edgiest Game of All Time, then released to horrible controls, barely passable voice acting, and all of the nudity in Netflix combined

Speaking as someone who has never played Agony, has played a lot of horror games, and has an interest in it conceptually: I think its own concept is kind of self defeating if effective horror is the goal. In good horror games, there are moments of relative safety and chances to relax and breathe. The fact that you'll need to venture forward out of those calm moments where you can recover means you'll dread what will be thrown at you next. Since the entirety of Agony takes place in Hell (as far as I know) there is never a moment of relief to contrast all the booby gorefest on display. If a player is constantly subjected to it, they will naturally grow numb to the effects of the disturbing imagery. Plus, you're in Hell. What is there left to dread when things can't possibly get any worse for you?

Agony was so hyped up to be this powerful adult game that everyone wanted but it fell flatter than a pancake made of flat soda. broken mechanics, poorly done story, generic hell world, poorly thought out abilities that culminated in a game as limp as the many dicks that were excited for it, my own included. The only good thing to come outbof it is the porn that uses the demon on the box. Not to demean porn but the games legacy is better remembered by creators who put the decent unique demon lady in much better quality animations.

It was agony to stay motivated to play it.

Brutalmoose put it best: (from his review of Animal) The three things I felt most often while playing were: "What the hell am I supposed to be doing?" "How the hell was I supposed to figure that out?" and "This is terrible."

I see hell as a giant strip club where if you touch the dancers the Balrog bouncers rip your soul apart.

Played it when it originally came out, it was very broken and I didn't make it past the second level. Later it got a 'unrated' update that fixed a bunch of issues, and I actually finished it. While I wouldn't say it's a favorite game, I don't really feel like it deserved the level of hate it got. It's just mediocre, not terrible. It had some great moments in it, and some of the level design is very beautiful. But then it also had weird segments like suddenly having to fight a boss for some reason. Succubus mode was WAY better; hence why the game got a sequel.

I honestly didn't play this game, but I did watch it. And it was enough to tell me that I don't need to invest my time and money on this title Great video as always🍻
  • You should play Eternal Darkness for the GameCube. It was like Resident Evil to a point. The game literally tests your sanity. You could go into a room one time and the room will be upside down. And you could go in that exact same room and you could be headless or you'd see a volume meter that would scroll down basically making that room on mute or you could enter that same room and it would be pitch black. It's all random. So you never know what obscurities will appear. Like I said Eternal Darkness will test your sanity. Lol.
  • Honestly, I think Agony shouldn't have been made into a horror game. it should have been a beatem up where you are fighting to survive in hell as you try to become the king of hell. I some what enjoyed the game on the harder difficulty but honestly they should have made it a combat related game instead of a run and hide game

Actually was one of the backers for the Kickstarter. I was so excited I even bought an extra copy on PS4, but that was more so because I didn't have a strong enough PC at the time. I remember being so let down after the intro sequence, it looked absolutely crap on consoles but PC was just as bad. The sad part is the game is still ugly and looks unfinished with the Unrated version. Instead of properly fixing it, Madmind just ripped the assets and recycled them to make a new game, Succubus, which plays far better although still not that great imo, and not the one I originally wanted in the first place. A survival horror game in Hell still seems plausible, and gratuitous gore is to be expected but this thing is an exercise in showing why restraint is important. The studio took on way too big a project for their first game and it came out as a broken, ugly abomination. One of the worst games I've ever played.
  • I could barely make it through the first hour of the game. For all the reasons said in this video. The loading screens were long as hell, everything looks the same, there is no sense of direction, movement feels terrible, sometimes you'll take damage and not even know why, nothing is particularly frightening, the real agony is trying to find out where you're supposed to go next.
