The IMPORTANCE of Heartstopper

Since it's release on Netflix, Heartstopper has taken the internet by storm. I've always wanted to do a video on Heartstopper. As someone who has been reading the story prior to the live adaptation for years now, doing a video on the story was always a given for me. With the show now out and it being pride month, it just felt even more fitting to push this video out a little earlier (as it's still taking a while to edit my Skip and Loafer video).

This was quite different to edit compared to my normal manga videos, and came with challenges I hadn't come across before. But I hope it all sounds and looks okay - as I'd love to cover more western stories in the future!

  • I'm working on my own webcomic about the trans experience, more specifically on how hard it can be to even realize you're trans, especially as an adult where it's easy to feel like "it's too late" and "why didn't I figure this out sooner" can feed self doubt even more. The fact that Heartstopper is so successful fills me with a lot of joy.

We seriously need more teen shows like this. I’m 15 and watched Heartstopper, and I absolutely love it. It’s so hard to find a show geared toward my demographic that doesn’t go heavy on adult topics. Having something be so fluffy and warm with the character interactions is something I miss. It’s hard find a series that’s in the middle, something not a kids show but that’s not something for adults. Finding that middle ground is hard so hopefully in the future they make more media like this
  • Hey great video as always. Just a quick warning about the ending to any authors out there. Ok, so I watched a video by the author of Heartstoppers, and if I remember correctly she actually had a lot of trouble getting her book traditionally published after having published online. She was a VERY rare VERY special case. So the recommendation at the end to just "upload" your stories online, shouldn't be taken universally. Please be aware that most of the time, if you publish something online, your chances of traditional publishing drop nearly to zero. Heartstoppers is supper special for a LOT of reasons. If you make a story and you want to profit from it, please deeply consider how you publish it and how you plan to profit from it. Webtoons works only for a small number of people, as does traditional publishing. So just be cautious and do as much research as possible. If you are just posting for fun, then none of this applies to you! Go have a great time!
  • The fact that it appeals to so many LGBTQ and straight adults shows how much people want wholesome, well made, well acted programming.

I knew I was gay since 12 but I could never accept that part of me. For me, it was an anomaly, something that I should be guilty of, something that I can just hide and live a 'normal' life. 8 years later, I chanced upon this book and something about it struck. Nobody had ever told me that two boys can also fall in love, that gay is something more than a category, as pure as any other romance. Since then, I have come to accept my sexuality, hopelessly fallen in love with a straight guy, got my heart broken and it's been a hell of a life but I'm a lot more comfortable in my skin. So I'm forever grateful this book and many other works representing us exists, as small things go a long way..♥️

Very nice video, very touching. And I feel like I say this to every one of your videos, but your voice and editing are of great quality. Congratulations again!
  • @TravenTalks
Great video! I honestly didn't expect to like Heartstopper (the show, still need to read the comic) as much as I did, but a lot of it just hit a lil bit too close to home with my own experiences in a way I hadn't really seen before, and a lot of your points sum it up really well. Although, it was weird, cuz I watched Heartstopper immediately after finishing It's a Sin, and I cannot even begin to describe the tonal whiplash I experienced from that decision, lol

heartstopper has been my favorite comic for a while and hearing the way you talk about it made me honestly tear up :'D i love the passion you put into these videos keep it up!*.✧
  • This video is fantastic but Im freaking out because I wasnt expecting you to mention Kill Six Billion Demons, that's like my favourite webcomic ever. I've heard people have qualms about certain aspects of the LGBTQ+ representation in the story, but I do think it at least attempts some really interesting things.

I'm so happy seeing heartstopper grow it helped me realize my sexuality
  • I wish that heartstopper existed when I was a teenager if a graphic novel or tv show like this had existed back then I might not have repressed my personality and stayed closeted until my mid 20s and could have saved myself years of emotional and mental anguish. Even though I'm in my late 30s now I still feel the effects of being so repressed and I have to say that these books and the tv adaptation are so beautiful, sweet and uplifting. I'm so happy that young LGBTQ teens have such a great example as this series to show them that they can live happy uplifting lives and dont have to hide there true selves.
  • That closing thought was so inspiring and wholesome, I certainly hope to be able to publish a queer story of my own in my native language so it can reach a broad latin american audience
  • @christine9869
Great video! Loved what you had to say and the editing really stands out.

  • @JoriamRamos
Another heartwarming video <3 I'm aware your editing style requires a lot of time, energy and attention — but it's worth, what a beautiful way to explore a story! I should give Heartstopper a look! :)
  • @hannah-lo6kk
Heartstopper is such an amazing series! Love to see yet another awesome video from you 😊
  • @Homodemon
I've written so much, I've drawn so much yet I'm so afraid of getting people to read it. And when I do allow it, it amounts to nothing. I can't help but viscerally hate this series, it's earnestness, how sugary sweet it is, the luck the author had how much everyone loves it. Man. I wish that were me...
  • I am so happy you made a video about Heartstopper! I love your video essays and how you deliver your thoughts to screen and I love Heartstopper so this will be a treat.
