Wilmersdorfer Straße, Haubachstraße, Behaimstraße and Gierkezeile form a square in Berlin's Charlottenburg district. A thousand people lived here in 1979, some families for more than 200 years. Great-grandparents used to grow cabbage where the Deutsche Oper now stands.

Cow and horse stables and old workshops can still be found on the farms. New shops have sprung up around them. Food and tobacco shops, student flats, pubs, bakeries and hairdressers characterise the Berlin-Charlottenburg of that time.
