What is the essence of Haiku Poetry?

Did you ever have an elementary school assignment to learn how to write haiku? I started Everyday Haiku in 2006 with knowing very little about how to write haiku other than what I had learned as a child. I went with what I knew, which was that it’s a short Japanese poem that has three lines with a 5/7/5 syllable count. Little did I know that there is so much more to it than that and counting syllables is not the focus. Be inspired by the winter haiku this week.
