Marmalade performing "Reflections of My Life", released originally in 1969.

It reached #2 in Ireland, #3 in the UK Singles Chart, #6 in the Canada Top Singles, #7 in the US Cash Box Top 100 and #10 in the US Billboard Hot 100.

This dramatic ballad from the Age of Aquarius finds the singer describing a very bleak outlook on life and the times. The song was sort of a hippie version of the blues.

The recording took place over three days in October 1969 at Decca Studios 2 and 1 in West Hampstead London with band members Graham Knight on bass, Alan Whitehead on Drums, Pat Fairley on acoustic guitar, and Junior Campbell on keyboards and electric guitars. Dean Ford sang lead vocal and Junior Campbell and Graham Knight provided harmony vocals.

The Marmalade were a Scottish pop group who enjoyed several hits in the UK between 1968 and 1976. Originally a band called Dean Ford & The Gaylords, they changed their name to Marmalade in 1967. They are best remembered in Britain for their cover of the Beatles song "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" which topped the UK charts around Christmas 1968.

In 1969, they signed to Decca Records, and their contract gave them complete freedom to write and produce their own records. The fruits of this arrangement was the recording of this song with its distinctive backwards guitar break, which was their only American hit.

75 years old and counting down. The docs give me a month or two due to cancer. I play this song often and think about my life. I've lived a great life with a wonderful wife of 52 years and 3 beautiful daughters and 6 wonderful grandchildren. I am ready to go on to whatever is ahead , long sleep or whatever. Don't want any sympathy. Just happiness for knowing me.

I'm 73 now and this song brings back so many memories. After so much drinking and drugs. The fact that I'm still alive is amazing. I'm clean and sober now for 25 years. And I give GOD all the credit .
  • there will never be anything like the 60s and 70s ever again. miss those days

My husband just passed away a week and a half ago. We got married in 2013 but had been together since 1997. Just last year I found out that this was his favorite song...ever. I have cried listening to it since his passing. I will play it for him when we scatter his ashes.

Didn't we just have the best music in the 60's and 70's, so much talent and individuality.

I think about all the young men and women in Vietnam when I hear this. Being a veteran myself it brings me to tears imagining what they went thru then and still today. Never forget the sacrifices for our country 🇺🇸

Watching this recently took me back so many years (I'm now 89!) and I think now what I thought then...an absolutely beautiful song, so powerful and emotive.

Isn't it funny how a song can hit you like a ton of bricks to your soul? What a beautiful story it tells us. ❤
  • My uncle passed away 2 weeks ago. They played this at his service last week. I miss him so much.
  • RIP Dean Ford--this song is true and beautiful. I'll be visiting this until I finally meet my wife and daughters. Thank you from a 75 year old man!

I love this song so much. It takes me back to a time, the 1970s, when the world was just a much better place. It makes me sad for young people today who will never have the chance to understand what the world was like when people related to each other on a very personal basis. There were no computers, smart phones, or cell phones whatsoever. There were 3-4, maybe 5 channels on the TV. What a great time to have been alive. Such a beautiful song...very haunting lyrics and music behind them...
