If you truly focus in the lyrics and have watched the movie, the song is only highlighting the ending and nothing else. It’s talking about the Sully’s pain and experience after that event. Particularly Jake with how it talks about defending those and everything he loves. Almost as it the lyrics are connected to the third iteration and probably will be a serious topic of discussion for the next one. Abel knew what he was doing lyrically. Amazingly written. Great and Song and an extraordinary Movie!

The lyrics mention that Weeknd wanted to protect the person from their own sins, but now they know they can only protect them by giving their own life.
