This year, we are going even more book-nuts in our homeschool - we're combining Year 1 from Build Your Library and Level 1 of Torchlight - both revolving around the ancient world and mythology! Build Your Library and Torchlight are two secular literature-based curricula, each encompassing many subjects such as history, literature, art appreciation, and science, but not math or grammar. If you are a secular, Charlotte Mason or Thomas Jefferson homeschooler, or just an eclectic homeschooler who loves living books like me, these are both really interesting programs to explore.

Watch to see how we plan to combine these curricula over an extended time frame. Curriculum and product links are located below.

My name is Tanya, and I'm a doctor-lawyer turned secular homeschooling mom of 3 rambunctious kiddos, ages 8, 5, and 3. You can find videos here about secular eclectic homeschooling, ADHD & 2e parenting, and practical minimalism. Homeschooling certainly isn't for the faint-of-heart, but I'll try to share what has been working for us along the way - as well as what hasn't been working. I love that you had all the books to show and compare. We’re going on year 3 of using and being influenced by BYL, but I’m so curious about Torchlight. I’m full up on curriculum this year, but if they come out with more older grades I will probably ending up purchasing it in the years to come. I actually bought the book of goddesses after watching a Torchlight book haul over at Our Wild Way. We have been keeping the book out and open on a windowsill to look at goddesses throughout our day. Aslo, my kids LOVED The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles. I’m excited to see your school year unfold!

Can’t wait to see your review as you go along, especially of Torchlight!
  • @katelyse
Good to know that curiosity chronicles has audiobooks! Sounds like a fun year you have planned. Hope y’all enjoy it!

Baby is the sweetest book! Definitely cried with that one as a child.
  • @jahelmick
Thank you for this video! We are doing the same w/ TL & BYL. So so excited about the books!!
  • @aishac919
Thank you Tanya for sharing this curriculum. So exciting to see books by diverse authors/protagonists!! Finally!! Can’t tell you how much I’ve watched this video in past few days. I came back here to comment that I put a lot of books on hold at my library to pre-read I’m afterschooler/supplemental mom. I’m jumping over to Our Wild Way for more deets on level 1
  • Lol... looks extremely similar to my history bookshelf 😂 ♥️ How fun that we’ll be doing the same as far as history goes this year! Yay!
  • Thanks for this video! I am gearing up to combine Torchlight and Build Your Library also so I am interested to follow your journey.
  • Thanks Tanya!!!! looks AMAZING!!! i love the all these BOOKS!!! 📚📚thanks for sharing both of these curriculum books! i need to look into Don't Forget to Write!!! torchlight is new to me, i like seeing all the different book selections!

I can't wait to hear how this goes! I will have a first grader next year and was thinking of doing something similar. Love BYL (we are doing level 0 which is super duper gentle), but the book list from torchlight was making me swoon. I'm vicariously excited!
  • @dluevanobaker
We’re using Lightning Lit for my second grader and we’re loving the read-alouds!
  • @suem1703
I am so interested in how you will put these two together. I would love to see more on that. Thanks for sharing all this great info.
  • @moniquebabe5241
This is exactly what I want to do!! I couldn't decide between the two and love them both so I was going to pick and choose things and make them two week lessons. We are also all year schoolers so I am not afraid of running out of time lol.
  • Love the look of the Torchlight, however I only have a 10 year old and was advised that Level 1 would not be enough for him so we are waiting for Level 2 to come out. Looking forward to seeing your reviews on Torchlight, Build Your Library and all the other things you are using this year!
  • @autostoppeuse
So I'm debating the same thing for 3rd grade...how did this work out?! What were the differences as you were going through in the two approaches? How did the blending go? For instance, I really like your input about the picture books. That definitely helps me think about what would work for my family.
  • I love this. I’m just learning about Torchlight and it sounds amazing!
