If you have SPF installed inside a building 90% chance you will be required to cover the foam with some type of interior finish or a protective thermal barrier. In this video I explain simply the principals and show you what to look for and why.

Just watched a Matt Risinger video recently where he and Joe Lstiburek were talking about different ways to go about dealing with a conditioned attic, and tucked neatly between all of the complex solutions was the golden phrase: "Or, you could just use closed-cell spray foam and not worry about any of this" I don't need to tell you how right you are 😉

Such great info. Im in the middle of building a custom home and your videos have answered so many questions about how I am going to insulate and meet code.
  • @phild5317
Great information. You answered several questions that were floating around my brain. It's amazing how smart you are, experience is a great teacher! Thanks for this great channel.
  • for national code in the USA look to the IRC section 316 really close to your code... Thanks for video.
  • @odynsrage4940
Excellent video, very informative. Thanks for educating me!!! I didn't even know spray celufibre was a thing.
  • @rupe53
Good job mentioning the "no local code" versus insurance companies. I see so many people digging in their heals and saying they don't have to comply because there is no local code. OTOH, there is national code in the USA and if you ever want to sell your property a bank might be interested in any shortfalls with construction.
  • @218philip
Thank you for this valuable information.
  • Thanks for this video. I was wondering about that aspect of the building code because some furnaces are in the attic. Although I have seen plywood encasing the furnace and only the hvac ducts running in the attic. And it's true there aren't a lot of hot exhaust runs anymore running through the attic. I'd like some on fireplace exhausts at one point and how you deal with those.

We're putting our house design together and I was considering for the 2x6 exterior walls: 2" closed-cell SPF covered with 3.5" Rockwool batts in the cavities for the added fire protection. There will be exterior insulation as well for the thermal break.
  • What about around a fireplace thimble going through a wall in a garage? I have 2 in airspace inside the thimble and the chimney has 2 inches of insulation double pipe. so do I need to cut back the red/pink medium density closed cell spray foam 2 inches back from the Selkirk thimble? I also put 2x6 boards and 5/8 drywall to separate the spray foam from the fire place. Planning on putting something on top of the drywall to help store some heat, like Tile. Thanks if you can help.

You're saying that PVC Schedule 40 flue pipes are OK to be in contact with spray foam?
  • @JbizzyG
I have a question about the location of the thermal barrier on the underside of steel floor in a class D building made of non-combustible construction. I am getting conflicting information. Construction as follows: 1/4" welded floor plate on steel skid, spray foam and then DC315. Spray foam vendors say it should be applied this way. But some states (Texas mainly) say the thermal barrier should be against the surface to be protected (steel floor in our case) and then foam over top of that, which makes no sense. Who's right? Why do the thermal barrier to the floor and leave the foam exposed?
  • @khaledelabed
Hi Mike Is fiber glass fabric covering approved as a barrier to protect foam?
  • If you were spraying dc315 on open cell would it still work as open cell
  • @ronsmith7739
I think I will stay with Rockwool, it's fire proof period.
  • @brianbryant812
Yeah Ron Smith Rockwall is fireproof but it’s still fiberglass and you don’t get anything out of it so good luck with your Rockwall it sucks installing that material
  • @jeradLiberty
I am currently dealing with an inspector Telling me I cannot have exposed closed cell foam although we sprayed intumecint paint over it The foam we used has a class one fire rating Itself, this is an assembly haul I don't know that that makes a difference. Right now I'm just praying That he is wrong because otherwise I have about a $150000 Irredeemable disaster he said the thermal barrier paint doesn't satisfy NFPA 275
  • @tc6849
Can you just plaster over spray foam instead of sheetrock? Talking interior
  • @NeedsMoreToys
Matt Risinger recently did a video on why he used Rockwool in his home. Seemed like he got some free insulation as Rockwool sponsored the video. Kind of slimy to get sponsored and talk about it as the best choice. He lost some credibility with me.
