I've seen several comments that take issue with the fact that the Cylon Basestars manage to hang in there in the fight for longer than might otherwise be expected, given that they have no kind of energy shielding the way that Federation starships do, and given the power of Federation phasers, photon and quantum torpedoes. My own thought on that is that both Cylon defense systems (as well as Galactica) followed a different defense doctrine and technology. Perhaps using highly advanced materials' technology (possibly even more advanced than that of the Federation) in order to fabricate hull plating that serves as a more robust and effective defense system than might otherwise be possible with standard materials like Federation duranium and tritanium. They still can't go toe-to-toe for long in a sustained firefight with Starfleet's ships of the line, and their point-defense cannons can't seem to intercept torpedoes in order to stop them, but the hulls themselves could take quite a pounding for a bit longer. And then of course there's the fact that the Cylon cannons do next to no damage against starship shields. Only one Starfleet vessel sustained any damage, and it simply withdrew to let the others finish the job.
  • "Mr. Worf, set phasers to...low. Take our time with this. Enjoy it."

A Cylon fighter on the receiving end of a Galaxy class starship's main weapon, should disintegrate instantly, like a moth in a blowtorch.

Picard: "Analysis, Mr. Worf?" Worf: "It appears to be an inferior versions of the Borg... no wait, they are pure robotic beings and they cannot adapt to our technology." Picard: "Sucks to be them..."

Three stately Federation vessels, moving with grace and grandeur like the great ships of old. And then you've got the Defiant-class ship, like a hyperactive five-year-old on a tricycle throwing sticks of dynamite.
  • @Ovrkyl
That ending, as they came out of warp, perfect music, and can imagine the reactions of the people on those vessels at the sight before them. Tears of joy and relief, the long journey of little hope is finally at an end. They have found Home. Hail the heroes of the Galactica! They went out fighting with honor, true Colonial Warriors all.
  • Considering that canonically a hand phaser can vaporize 16 cubic meters of rock and the galaxy class phases are shown to drill a 5 km borehole in the surface of a planet in seconds, those basestars would not last that long.

Captain: "Warp 6, engage". Helmsman: "By your command." Navigator: "May the force be with us." Tactical: "bee Dee bee Dee bee Dee."

I love how the Star Trek ships move away from the first Cylon ship without waiting for it to finish blowing up. They know exactly how much damage they've inflicted and when the battle is over. It's the star ship equivalent of being cool enough to not look back at the explosion. 😎
  • How it would have gone: Data: "We have arrived at the co-ordinates indicated by the archelogical data obtained from the artefact Captain" Picard: "Slow to half impulse, and begin full sensor sweep" Worf: "Captain, I detect a large number of space vessels in the vicinty. There also appears to be a substantial quantity of metallic debris and radiation" Picard: "Scan the spacecraft - I want to know what happened here" Worf: "Aye Captain. (pause). The ships appear quite primitive Captain. No shields; crude natural alloy contruction; fusion power. I am detecting large numbers of life-forms aboard - human!" Riker: "As we suspected. At least the Prime Directive won't apply" Worf: "Many of the ships appear to have been adapted to carry passengers, sir. Some are little more than bulk cargo carriers" Picard: "A refugee fleet, perhaps?" Riker: "If so, whatever they were running from might have caught up with them" Worf: "Captain! One of the human ships is under attack! Small craft - fighters of some kind!" Approximately the same level of technlogy as the other craft - primitive laser weaponry" Picard: "Hail them, Mr Worf. Warn them off." Worf: "Aye Sir. No response. Strange - the fighters register no life forms. Nothing other than some sort of computer system control. Very primitive, pre-Duotronic era" Picard: "Warn them again - and lock phasers" Worf: "Still no reponse. One of the human vessels is destroyed, sir. No survivors. The fighters have opened fire on us, Captain. Shields register virtually no impact" Picard: "Very well, Mr Worf. Set phasers to minimum power and fire. Let's show them we've got teeth - but not how sharp" Worf: "Fighters destroyed, sir. Receiving a hail from the human ships - they are using what I believe was known as 'radio'. They ask if we are from something called the thirteenth colony. They also warn us that something they call 'the Cylons' has several 'base stars" nearby" Riker: "Cylons? What the devil are they? Widen the scan area, Mr Worf"  Worf: "Aye sir. Detecting several large vessels - apparently designed as carriers for the fighters. Heavily armed and armoured by their standards - they represent no threat to us, however. They are moving towards the human ships, apparently intending to attack" Picard:"Life signs aboard the - I suppose base stars is as good a label as any" Worf: "None sir. Only more of the computer complexes and what seem to be some form of robots" Picard: "Very well. It appears we must engage these 'Cylons'. Phasers and photon torpedoes at your discretion, Mr Worf. Hit them hard enough to try to make them retreat, but if necessary destroy them" Worf: "Sir, two base-stars are destroyed. The largest appears to be a command ship of some kind. It has retreated - very early warp-drive or equivalent" Picard: "Very well. Prepare to extend our warpfield around the human ships - lets get these people home"

(Enterprise-D destroys four raiders) Cylon Fleet: A challenger, with some bite. Okay, might be difficult, but we can take it! (Magellan warps in) Cylon Fleet: ....Okaaay weren't expecting reinforcements. But there's three of us, and two of them. And we're bigger! (Enterprise-E warps in) Cylon Fleet: ........ okay maybe... MAYBE this will be too close to call. I mean those raiders didn't even scratch that one ship. Maybe we should cut our losses and- (Defiant warps in) Cylon Fleet: FOR FUCK'S SAKE!

This thing is actually more than 10 years old and out performs many things in awesomeness
  • This video never gets old. Whenever I need a pick up it's there like an old friend.
  • @allenbair226
This is, admittedly, one of my favorite fan films out there. I always imagined it as so poignant that the colonial ships be rescued and escorted to Earth by Earth's own forces which, in the 24th century are vastly superior to either the Cylons' or the Colonial Fleet.
  • Had to come by for a fix. The warp and shield effects still give me chills. The music is perfectly choreographed to the action. A true masterpiece of science fiction art.
  • @Alamandorious
Boy, after seeing the Enterprise D in ST:P, the scene of the Enterprise charging to the rescue here holds a lot more meaning than ever before.
  • @1stdualm
In reality of the lore, one galaxy class starship would make short work of the entire Cylon fleet.
  • @greygalaxy8638
The 13th Colony shall not leave you to fight alone! Truly epic. heroic tear
  • @Roddy229
Beautiful work on the effects, I'll definitely say that. Here's how I can see this playing out. Cylon fleet: We have the colonials on the run, their flagship is destroyed (Enterprise D warps in) Cylons: One more ship? This will be easy (Cylons open fire, and realize that the Enterprise has shields) Cylons: Uh oh. They upgraded (Remaining Federation ships drop out of warp) Cylons: Oh shit. We're boned. shits bricks
