The opinions presented do not necessarily reflect the opinions of FOBBV.

Nature takes care of nature. The eggs will feed and sustain other forms of life, be it ravens, flying squirrels, insects or other critters.

It appears one eggshell lost its structural integrity and broke by 7:52AM. By 11:40AM the egg crumbled further and disappeared from view. It likely remains in the bowl.

It is uncertain whether Jackie stepped on the egg at 7:13AM and breached it. She stopped incubating on 4/8 and she could be moving less carefully around the eggs. It is unclear if there was any development inside. We will watch to see whether more information presents itself.

In a surprise turn of events, Jackie showed up after dark at 7:48PM and vigorously aerated the nest bowl, effectively hiding the remaining two eggs from the camera view. They remain in the bowl and may reappear later.

Both Jackie and Shadow spend the night together on one of their favorite roost trees. The Night Vision image at 8PM+ is grainy as it was already very dark.

♀Mommy Duty Report:Jackie attended the nest for 8 min, 2 visit(s). She was last seen incubating or tending the eggs on 4/8.
♂Daddy Duty Report: Shadow attended the nest for 8 hr 18 min, 5 visit(s). He did not attempt to incubate the remaining 2 eggs after the third egg disappeared from view.

🥚Egg1 was laid 1/25 16:55 bit.ly/48OfNt5, Egg2 was laid 1/28 13:59 bit.ly/3OkpEi7, Egg3 was laid on 1/31 17:58 bit.ly/3SGTwb5 .
It is unlikely that the eggs will hatch at this point. We have no way of knowing why. It could be environmental, such as temperatures, humidity percentages, oxygen levels at high altitude, etc. It could be biological with something just being off at the time the eggs were created. It is very unlikely that either Jackie or Shadow are infertile since they have already had 2 sets of chicks together - in 2019 and 2022.

ℹResident Bald Eagle male: Shadow (unbanded) since May 2018. Estimated hatch year: 2014
ℹResident Bald Eagle female: Jackie (unbanded) since September 2016. Estimated hatch year: 2012

I knew it would be you, Cali, to bring us the whole story of the events today! The beginning of the end, the middle,Shadow grieving and accepting that the eggs are gone, and sweet Jackie, burying the other two! I think she did that out of love, to make sure Shadow did not come back. Which he didn’t. And they seemed so sweet together in the trees afterwards, and I love the little song that they sang after Jackie buried the eggs. Thank you, Cali, for always bringing us great footage of the whole story! And thank you, friends of big Bear Valley, and all the volunteers who bring us these magnificent birds! I have so enjoyed watching them, and they have totally enriched my life! Jackie and Shadow are taking it in stride and nature is what it is! And I can’t wait for their next clutch of eggs so we can watch them all over again arguing over who gets to sit on their precious eggs! God bless y’all! And God, please bless Jackie and Shadow!

Jackie is helping shadow to move on. She’s a strong mum

I have no doubt whatsoever that I just watched two loving, dedicated, incredibly selfless parents grieving for their loss. The final gesture of burial with a hearts prayer sung into the night afterwards was like witnessing their sense of closure. Such sweet sorrow. 💔 I hope their next batch will be rewarding for them.
  • Balled my eyes out. That's what I call bonded. Jackie being strong and comforting her Shadow through this. Then a sweet melodic lullaby duet before tucking in for the night. 🎶🦅💞🦅🎶

That was heart-wrenching but it needed to happen. Shadow's grief was apparent but he will move on now, I was surprised to see Jackie cover them up the way she did. Their nighttime chortles were so sweet, I've missed hearing that, and seeing them in their roost tree was sweeter still. Thank you, Cali, for taking us through this sad process with such kindness and carefulness. You are much appreciated.

😢 I've been watching for over 4 yrs and this has to be one of the most emotional videos I've watched. I did see Jackie peck at the broken egg, sit on the eggs for most of the morning, then bury them and chattering with Shadow as to say it will be alright. 😭💔 I pray for their safety and new clutch! Thanks Cali, what a blessing you are to keep us informed. 🙏🥰🦅💕🦅😇

What a beautiful moment of Jackie covering the eggs. I know she was doing it for Shadow. Tonight they roost together and hopefully get a good nights sleep. Sometimes letting go can be just as beautiful as the start.

People who have little to no interest in the animal kingdom miss a lot, don’t they? Thank you, Cali Condor and FOBBV and the many dedicated people who helped to bring us the sweet true life story of Shadow & Jackie, American Bald Eagles.❤🦅🦅❤️ This is the stuff great stories and movies are made of. God bless you all and thank you.😘

This day has been full of surprises. Jackie and Shadow have taught us much today. I'm completely in awe of them. Devotion, Patience and Complete Love for each other and their eggs. Seeing them together tonight is so wonderful. TY for letting us experience this world of theirs if we pay attention we all have "sticks" to move around. Thank You Cali Condor & Jackie and Shadow.

I just recently lost my son and I am now crying for this eagle couple who are having to move forward. It is not easy but I pray they can have another season to bring new life. Thank you for sharing!

This was sad, but also beautiful to watch. Thank you so much, Cali, for helping us to "let go" also, along with dear Jackie & Shadow! Their dedication and bond to each other is beyond words! Loved seeing them together in the tree and hearing them singing a duet. So precious! They have really captured my heart!
  • Ohhh, Shadow, Jackie..feel like I just witnessed the grieving, n putting their babies to rest..in peace 💔
  • @Jonathan-jw1ch
Shadow may be heartbroken but he needs to move on😢
He is showing his dedication to the non viable eggs..
Let's hope he gives up completely and both will lead a new life!
    Thx Cali Condor 🎉

We need a mug with Shadow's picture and "Dad of the Year" written on it. What a sweet and tender heart he has! ❤
  • @vickilynn2778
What an end to this year to watch Jackie bury her eggs was heartbreaking, but the commitment from Shadow and Jackie was so inspiring to watch. Thank you, Cali Condor, for all your hard work and sharing your video clips. ❤🦅🦅❤

Life is a novel that each of us reads page by page, day by day. Some of the pages are happy. Some of them are sad. None of us can skip to the final chapter for that is the mystery and the grandeur of life itself. As we read each page we must commit ourselves to continuing this journey no matter how difficult some of the chapters may be. We must persevere, just as these eagles do every day, page by page, chapter by chapter. We don’t know how or when this book ends but must savor each word as we progress through it. This is but a turn of the page. And a new chapter begins! 🦅🌞🦅
  • @foreverfaith7
Yep Jackie has had enuf & helped Shadow get there too. Thankfully they have such a strong bond of loving devotion to each other . And helps that they love their eagledom too.😉 Gorgeous serene, peaceful views to help them move on & heal. Now they can enjoy hanging w/each other again. Precious couple! 🦅💓🦅

Looked like one egg may have been struck by a stick at 7:13am. Almost lost it when at 7:52am Shadow returned, noticed the crack, stared intently as if expecting a chick, then tenderly rolled the eggs before sitting. Don't know what the future holds for J+S, but both did their best, an outstanding job at nurturing, provision and care. 🦅❤
  • @TheEmaile
Wow, their story is like a movie script and you captured it so well. ❤️ The way it ends with them both leaving the nest, Jackie doing the final farewell at night, followed by their immediate calls to each other, and finally sitting together in the roost tree. Aside from their non-viable eggs, everything about these two is just so perfect. (Though there is beauty in the imperfection, as well)

Very interesting the way that Shadow inspected the eggs and the remains of the broken egg. Seems like he’s trying to make sure that nothing came out of it. That he’s not missing an eaglet. Also interesting that that one broken egg triggered something in him that lead him to leave the other two eggs.

Wish my two fave birds luck next season. See you next year! 🍀
  • @terrysandiego
Interesting also that Shadow tasted the broken-egg remains and did not like what he found. He shakes his head several times and then cleans his beak.
