McDonald's - "Introducing...The Happy Meal" (Commercial, 1979)

Published 2012-03-12
Here's a neat commercial for the introduction of the Happy Meal at McDonalds.

"Offer ends July 29, 1979 - While supplies last." (something tells me they extended this offer)

This aired on local Chicago TV on Saturday, June 23rd 1979.

About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:

The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 3,700+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:

I remember when they first came out... The first Happy meal was the only one that didn't have a movie and/or toy tie-in.
  • 1979- the UN declared it the "Year of the Child" and two icons of modern childhood made their debuts, Nickelodeon and the Happy Meal!

I can remember getting my first Happy Meal at McDonalds when they first came out. It seems like yesterday but its been many many years ago. Lol I was the first one of my friends to get one and I thought I was really cool. 😂😂 Seeing this ad brings back so many wonderful memories of my childhood.💕

I was in McDonald's recently for a light meal, and the order taker convinced me to buy a Happy Meal, because all of what I ordered was in it, but it was cheaper. I said OK, although I was kind of embarrassed eating a Happy Meal. I forgot what I did with my toy. :(

The first Happy Meal that I remember came with a Star Trek communicator that scrolled a Star Trek comic strip.

Why is it the dad seems excited about the prize and not the kid?

I'm an 80's kid & I yearn for those listless days when my biggest worry was whether I'd get the McDonaldland or the choc. chip cookies. Those days are LONG gone!

The "Happy Meal" concept was originally test-run in metro Phoenix (and a few other cities) a year earlier, in 1978. I remember that the original logo was the words "HAPPY MeAL" (with the "e" beinng lowercase); when the name was displayed on screen at the end, the "e" would start laughing.
  • Anybody miss those cookies? Little ceaser's had the same ones too. Is there any mcdonald's that still sells them?

Happy 35th anniversary. and for the expiration date.
  • I always loved the Happy Meals! As a kid in the 1980s I collected a score of toys, including the transforming McDonalds meals, the Berenstein Bears, Bambi. I even remember calling local McDonalds to track down one that still had a Sister Berenstein Bear because I had the other three and the others ran out of Sister (I got it!). Plus I worked at McDonalds in the late 90s when they had Babe Pig in the City dolls (the summer of the Arch Deluxe). Good memories. :)
  • I remember buying my first happy meal when I was 6. But that's when it was back in either 1998 or 1999. I was so very happy when I saw a happy meal ad from McDonalds. I thought that's when the happy meal came out. But after watching I learned that It actually came out i the late 70s. Boy I was very wrong.
